I have been in the saltwater game for about ten years.I have always wanted to keep corals but I never have success they always just slowly fade away. I set this tank up over a year ago now. I have had a sebea clown for a year. Its a 55 gallon tank and I have a 175 watt metal halide. It has a 30 gallon sump refugium .

What is your maintenance routine? What are your parameters? Calcium, alkalinity, magnesium, salinity, are the big ones.

What corals have you tried and what do you want to keep? 10 years of being in the hobby means nothing if you keep doing the wrong thing. Instead of experimenting what might live, why don't you start with understanding your tank parameters and find out what's needed. These basic parameters are crucial for success in reefing.

Another thing you definitely have to check is copper. If you have been medicated your fish in the same tank before, the copper will be absorbed in the silicon and it will slowly leach out and kill the corals.
*I'm very disappointed in the posts I've read in this thread. Instead of offering to help the OP's tank parameters for long term, you offered something else for him to kill.

Api test kits. Yeah im a little agressive with the feeding I guess. I feed my fish everyday. Ive tried zoas and some different polyps. I couldnt tell you the names specifically. I have seen these ones that look like waving fluorescent green grass I want to get those and then the other ones I like are like white and there constatnly opening and closing couldnt tell you the name of either. But im really open to anything. And when I said I have been into this for ten year that is with no coral experience.
I would raise the calc, do a few water changes and maybe bump up the all a tad

API is not good enough of a test kit for coral. You need to get salifert, Red Sea pro, elos, or other reef grade test kit.

Alk is alkalinity and KH and dKH is a unit of measurement of alk. Is that 8 meg/l or 8dKH? 1meg/l=2.8dKH. Make sure you know your unit when reading the result of your test.

If you're agreesive on your feeding, your PO4 cannot be 0 woth NO3 at 40. This is why you need to get a better test kit.
And again, you need to know the unit in your tests. 40ppm of NO3 is okay, but 40ppt will be an issue.

If nitrates are at 40 even fish have a hard time this is me / nick is right a more agressive maintanence regiment / to water and some good nutrient export is well in order there
When you say I need good nutrient export. Can you explain what that means and how it would be accomplished. I have a protein skimmer. I tried growing cheato its just dies off slow.** Weird the phostphate test kit is a red sea kit everything else is api. I will have to upgrade my test kit game. No I do not use rodi I wish I could. I top off like 5 gallons of water every three days. If I buy rodi at my lfs I would be broke.
