Clam lighting

jroczniak

Fish Filet!
Would i be able to keep a clam under 384W of PC lighting?

The lighting is around 25 inches from the bottom of the tank (sand) I believe.

Thanks in advance.

no, i dont think so, you will probably need mh to keep a clam

Do different clams have different lighting requirements? Are there some that are ok with less light than others. I'd love a clam too, but run T5's (8x54) over a 75. Will they just not look as bright and glimmery without MH's?

I've heard of people keeping clams under PCs. A derasa, gigas or Squammi would probably be fine, I dont know about maximas, and croceas are out. You might be able to keep a max/croc high up in the rocks. (theyre supposed to be in rocks).

I'd say give it a try, but the problem with clams is they dont look bad when theyre not doing well. They look fine up until the day they die.

Yeah, light needs go like this, from least to most:

Derasa/Gigas
Squamosa
Maxima
Crocea

I'd worry about the size.. deresa's can get 18".. squamy's can get over a foot too. Might not be enough water volume.

Duds, he has 3 times the light, over a tank thats not much bigger. He's got a better shot than you (not that hes a guarantee.)

That being said, the lower light clams do get HUGE. The gigas gets to be the size of a small child. Curl up in the fetal position, and thats about what size they get.

IMHO, if you can keep SPS with your lights, you can keep clams.

Quoting myself. Yikes, doesn't get any lower than that.

I just did some research. Apparantly the gigas gets to 4 feet, and about 750 lbs. So, a very very large child.

I remember snorkelling in Kwajalein and seeing clams I was afriad of.. Bigger them me!

i think if you keep it higher up in the tank the better the chance youll have

Well, I have the same situation, I have a Blue Crocea (sp) clam at the bottom of my 24" high tank. It's a 72g bow with 6x65PC on it, BUT I have added a 70w mh spot retro right over the clam. Needless to say.... he's happy as a..... clam... After a few days without the MH on, he looks noticeably different... I do imagine it's species dependent though..

o ok I think i might be adding a 70 watt se mh on there from lowes :)
