cleaner shrimp attacking my crocea

so assuming they are targeting it because it's weak, is there anything that can be done to save this poor thing?

We all feel for you, nicky, but it is what it is. Unfortunatly,I have done what you've done to no avail. (keep it away from predators) In my case it didn't help...The clam still kicked it. Good Luck...(Not trying to bust your bubble) The foot is a good sign that from what I can see .....it's heading to the big clam place in the sky.

bummer. I was hoping that wouldn't be the case. I was really starting to get some confidence in this hobby, since I hadn't had anything die on me in a while (except for a jumper a few months ago).

In retrospect, is there something that I may have done wrong with this clam? I have a small crocea that looks fine, but I would eventually like to have 2-3 clams in my soon to be upgraded 38. Don't want to duplicate mistakes though....

A good trick I learned is if you want to keep the clams on the sand bed place a half clam shell under its foot so the foot can attach to it and this will protect the foot from predators attacking it. also I find that good lighting is a must. I have kept clams under vho and mh and both worked great for me but having enough light is the trick. Last is don't buy any clams less than 3" because under 3" they reguire a lot of pyhtoplankton to keep them alive but over the 3" and they mostly reguire light. don't feel to bad I lost a clam also and till this day I have no idea why but the other two are doing great.
Take care

That must have been the problem - for the first few months (3-4), it was on a smallish rock on the sandbed, but it was creating a deadspot, so I put it directly on the sandbed and moved the rock. I also lost my sixline to a jumping incident, so that could also have added to the critter population.

Lesson learned. I will def. not put a clam directly on the sandbed anymore. Does anyone know of a place to get clam shells? My LFS doesn't have them.

That's exactly what I would have suggested. That is what I do as well...
Nick you'll probably have a few half shells to do that on your next clam or the crocea you have already. Hope I don't offend you.

no offense taken! I hate to say it, but I was actually thinking the same thing myself.

Should I pull the clam out now, or wait until it's completely gone?

I would try putting it up high close to the light just to give it a shot. I doubt it will work, but as long as you get it out before it really starts rotting I don't see any harm.

I'm a little stupid about clams, but I was curious that no one mentioned it. Aren't croceas supposed to be not put on sand? I thought they were one that did need to be up away from the sand critters up on the rocks? Maybe I'm wrong on that.
