cleaning old sand

I started a new tank and have about an inch of sand left in the old tank. I was thinking of hitting it with a hose, draining off all the cruddy water and then letting it sit in distilled water to leach out any of the contaminants from the tap water? Do you think that would work or do I have to rinse it with distilled? (I don't have an R/O, just gallon jugs of distilled from the store)
