Controllers vs. monitors

Is it better to spend the money up front and get a controller. I know they are more expensive that individual monitors, but in the long run is it worth it. And what controllers are good that are not too expensive.

Do you know if the neptune come with the ph and temp probes to monitor them or do you have to get them separate?
