Adequate lighting for what you want to keep.
A reliable, properly tuned protein skimmer.
Reliable way to maintain Ca, Alk and Mag. Stability is key. (dosing or reactor)
A well maintained RODI unit.
Test kits. (Ca, Alk, Mag, nitrate, at a min.) I use Elos for Mag and Nitrate AP for CA and Alk.
Reliable heater with some type of controller. ( Built in heater thermostats are notorious for failure.) I use a Ranco controller.
A refractometer.
A TDS meter.

The list could go on and on. I'm sure others can add to the list.
You don't have to have the best. Just do some research and think long term when buying equitment. Get the right stuff the first time.
