Cyano outbreak ? Please help!

So out of left field i have a huge problem with what i think is Cyano algea. Its green and is covering my rock and carpets on the sand bed. It can be blown off extreme easy but it looks like hell! The tank is coming up on 2 years and iv never dealt with this before. Im using RO water and all my parameters are in check. The only thing iv started dosing is liquid Calc/alk to keep it stable. My lights run from about 10 am to 6pm then the blues turn on for a few. What could cause this and how do i treat the problem? Like i said all my parameters are in check and stable. I can blow this stuff off my live rock before i go to bed and its back full force in the morning. Any tips? thanks !

I cant be to much help but cyano in my personal experience i just ride off . I just went tru it with all my tanks .
changing my light schedule for less time on help a lot for me . also sucking some off during water changes also help but not that much. also try posting a pic because my cyano was kind of red and brown you could of have something else .
again I don't know a lot of about this I just went thru it not to long ago . but I'm sure some of the expert will chime in soon . hold tight

I am experiencing something similar. The algae is bright yellow/green and isn't going away. It seems to act like a bacteria as it grows very fast, but I am not aware of any bacteria that are this color. It is yellow color of sponges. It is not the brown yellow of dinos, and certainly not red/purple/brown of cyano. Mine first appeared after I put in some "live" sand, commercially purchased in a bad (not from ocean, LFS, or friend). I will post a picture later. I wonder if we are fighting the same thing.

Mine is growing on the corals that were otherwise fighting for survival. My tank parameters are also in line with zero phosphate. But something is negatively influencing my tank. I reduced my light cycle and increased the light/time on the refugium. Refugium going strong. The stuff in the display appears to be waning, but still all over the place.

Please post when/if you find the problem and solution.

I believe your phosphate level might be off. They die off pretty quickly without lights. Try turning the light in the refugium off if they exist in the refugium . The skimmate should have a different color 2 verify the die-off within a couple of days

I have a bare bones setup. Hang on back filter that I use Charcoal and filter sock. Led Par 38 lights. I don't have an overflow, refugium or skimmer. Iv also never experienced an outbreak like this in the year and a half the tank has been up. Its also a small 16 gal bow front. If I shut the lights off in my tank for a day will his effect all my corals ?

depends which corals you have .
if you have a lot of sps i wont do it soft corals they be fine .
just make your time schedule less til the problem its under control

Cleaning out your filter everyday until this resolves helps

Cyano is fed mainly from Iron and silica among some other things , and since we can't get good measures for these things we blame other stuff . chances are one of those two are slightly elevated , it doesn't take much to start Cyano . GFO adds a lot of Iron to your water . and is basicly rust . so if maybe one of your pumps is rusting ? That will do it . Silica well its in the sand and of course in the silicone in the seams and.... yep in the salt we use . As for lights out . Most corals can handle as many as 7 days without light . Think about it . storms can block out the sun for days and the reefs don't die . 3 days lights out should give you a good jump on things
