DIY or Build Forum?

Yrs ago The DIY forum was a great place for finding DIY equipment, stand, electronics ect... When did it become a build off thread? I understand that there are things in the threads that are DIY.. But where are the plans? Where are the diagrams? What is being contributed to helping the 6500 other members of the site?
Just a thought but maybe there should be a forum for build threads and untie the DIY forum for what it is supposed to be??

i see your point it is kinda a build off now you could say. i think thats because we have diy'ed just about everything. i posted my build not for fame or competion but just for insparation to others. i am a mechanic not a carpenter but yet i put this all together by reading and getting idea's from other diy/build threads. i honestly don't think you can split the two because in the end diy for yourself or diy for everyone it's still diy. i also think that alot of our more famous diy'ers have just become too busy with life to dedicate the time like it used to be.

um speaking of changing the face of the diy forum....... i think a mod should give us the boot and move this to the lounge forum LoL

Agreed Big. I should have posted this in the lounge. If a MOD would be kind enough to move it over.....
Should have put it there..
But on the topic I do agree that build threads are great an provide alot of inspiration to everyone but at the same time I feel that there has to be something that someone can model after through instructions to be in a DIY thread..
This isn't here to start an arguement or anything of the sort. I just believe that is what the DIY thread is for and not just a personal build up...

I just looked through a few pages and WOW! I never realized how bad the build threads took over the DIY section. I put my build in the wrong place in reef talk, lol!
I think you have a valid point, I like the idea of a build thread myself!

To be honest, I have to agree. I usually come to the DIY forum first to check out new and interesting things being made but usually end up only seeing build threads.

Gee, I put my build thread here because it was basically a series of DIY threads in one.

IMO part of this pattern is that build threads tend to be ongoing and keep getting bumped up, while actual DIY threads quickly get buired. There has never been a rule about where build threads do or do not belong, it's always been up to the members where they wanted their threads. FWIW if anyone has a build thread in DIY and they would like to have their own thread moved to Reef talk I'm sure that could be arranged (just report the thread and ask for the move)

It kinda burns me when I come looking for older build threads of certain types of equipment.. ie.. calcium reactors, denitrators, skimmers ect.. and lo and behold they can't be found.. Used to be able to search through many DIY pages and find just about anything you wanted to build.. Now I click into DIY.. And I find build thread after build thread.. Alot of the build threads we gather ideas for our own tanks yes.. but after pages of searching.. or after searching/reading through thread after thread.. To be honest .. Me personally I wont read through a build thread I go to the last page.. If I see something useful then I might go back through and search for what they did..
When I go to a DIY section of a site I expect to be able to identify right off the bat what the thread is and if it will benifit me.. Ie.. DIY xxxxpellet reactor ... homemeade diy vortech flux capacitor nuclear cold fusion back up power... ect...

Maybe I'm wrong.. Maybe I'm not.. How many people out there reading this have made a DIY project ( not a stand) that they saved hundreds on or even pennies from reading A diy thread in this forum.. How many newer ppl even knew there used to be threads here that showed and Explained ho to build alot of that Expensive equipment your buying for less than half the price your paying??????

On a another topic of the DIY .. we need to either fix or delete the older DIY project links in the stickies at the top .. most either do not work or the pics don't show making them useless... Just another 2cents worth..

Again not trying to upset anyone with build threads.. Just think they need their own forum..

There is way too much 'build' in the DIY thread. I'm not hating on build posts but they don't instruct or help others do/save and should probably go to the photography section.
I agree the stickies should be updated, and build threads moved.

Possibly a general 'Projects' forum, where DIY projects get nominated like tank of the month and THEN moved to the DIY thread by an admin.
