diy skimmer party???

we could get a pretty good deal on acrylic too if enuff people get in on this

There is a thread at the top of DIY forum where a buch of reefers got together and built skimmers. Nate melted the cone in his oven. You just need a template that won't melt to heat the cone on

i was thinking more of the atb style where it is just one big cone

Well to do that cone you need a solid table saw no play in the fence. And a taper or sliding bed jig. Also a nice blade will save your body parts.

Then you will need some band/strap clamps.

The hard part is figuring out the taper and angle to cut on the taper. But when you layout the two flanges this will give you the points to go from.
That and a little math and your in business.

did you get that jbishop lol

that wouldnt be bad at all..if its think enuff

Its just glued on to a flat flange. I am an engineer but a different kind. I could still probably figure out the math as it has to equal the same angles.

nice..is it doable jbishop

haha im no expert. I think its doable but would be easier to do something round.

The layout of the flanges will give the end measurements of the tapered
piece. It is pretty easy to figure out the taper and angle to cut.

Jared is right the jsut working with tubes is easier
you can make simple jig and with a small pilot and make flanges very easy

here is an jig and in the second picture you can see the small pilot hole used to keep the jig in place. It is shallow so you don;t have to drill
through the material

I would LOVE to attend this meeting! I will be following closely and if you guys/girls don't mind maybe I could attend?

Thanks Much

Greg, very cool jig. Me likey. I called on that cheapo cone. Turns out its got 1 mm thin walls. But, its a perfect cone shape. She was telling me that she puts 6 lb porcelain santa heads on it. The weight of the heads keeps it extremely balanced. Given that we arent going for a job with our skimmers...it may be worth checking out. shes getting a s/h quote for me as well.

Yeah sure. This isnt a meeting per say just some people trying to build skimmers.

The cone thing is cool using tubs would be way easier.

I have prob two routers a jig like Gregs wouldn't be hard to make.

maybe we should do tubes.. just a big a** recirc skimmer..

Shipping on those cones is $37.50 for 1-10 of them. We could possibly use diesel vertical strips to reinforce her. Anyone know of any deals on tube? Cheapest ive found for 12" tube is like $98 a foot!

man tubes are expensive
