I saw this at RC and thought I'd post here as well. I have been acclimating all livestock but a bunch of people say they just throw corals right in after the temp is equal with no problems, so maybe I'm wasting my time:confused: What do you do?

i think you can get away with it with something that's been in someone's tank for a long time because they are healthy and can fight the water parameter change. In general it's not a good idea because it will most likely stress the coral and we really don't know what that does down the road (maybe nothing, who knows). Think about it.. most of our tanks have pH swings from 8 to 8.5 and different salinity and alk. If all three parameters are out of whack from source tank to destination tank that can't be great for the coral.

If you are lazy like me and are getting it from someone reputable here on BRS then you can just float the bag and then eventually poke some holes in it once temp has sync'ed with a toothpick and let the water slowly mix. Easy and effective :)

I never used to acclimate anything. My last purchase I did a very slow drip for about 2hr's I really wanted to take my time cause I really liked the fish. What do you know he was dead within a week.:(

I'm acclimating right now! :D

I always acclimate everything. It's easy enough that I figure why stress the little guys out. Now quarantine, I'm afraid that's another issue. Lately I haven't been QT anything.

I don't acclimate when I fly from Boston to LA...man, their sky is yellow and I can deal with it. Why not fish? I usually just temperature adjust fish and toss them in. I only have softies, but I usually just throw those in. The only reason why I do any acclimation at all on fish is cuz when I just throw them in and they are shocked, they can't defend themselves from the 'tougher' fish and I feel bad.
Haven't had anything die yet from tossing it in...

I am kinda exagerating, I do attempt to acclimate a more expensive fish or a small one I am worried about. Larger fish are more tolerant and I just toss in. I am so impatient though, I just can't wait to put them in the tank.

SW fish aren't very accustomed to changes in the environment like you and I, since the ocean barely changes from week to week, and even then, very very slowly. Anyways, whatever works for you.

that is a pretty bad analogy for the very reason that nate gave. think about the sheer volume of water the ocean contains. parameters sure aren't going to change much at all.

:) Think about the sheer volume of air in our world, paramaters aren't going to change much at all.

Much is relative...if the fish don't travel from fiji to florida, sure, it won't change much, just like if i don't travel from boston to LA it won't change much.

:)

That is why we pay for them...(to fly)

I acclimate everything. I'm still too new to the hobby to deviate from the "expert" recommendations! Now that I do the slow drip method with a knot tied in a tube, it really takes no effort at all.

I have a problem with the drip in that the temp of the bin I am acclimating in, changes quick (lowers) so that by the time I am done dripping I shock them anyways with the temp change...

You too? Sucks doesn't it, you do all that work and then you stick your hand in there to grab the coral and it's COLD!!!

David, you do acclimate to the pressure when the plane is landing

Not sure how to answer, corals are animals. I temp acclimate corals only.

I know but fish is too vague and I could say fish and other vertebrates and invertebrates but then it doesn't sound so smooth :)
