durso standpipe questions.

nitrofish

reefing again!
im new to durso's and want to make sure my setup is running correctly.

ok heres whats happening right now, the waqter level in the overflows are at the top of the elbow on the durso, but if I cover the air hole in the top the water level drops fast, like its flowing water much faster. should I cover the hole a little to make it drain faster or leave it as is? also my drains pipes are underwater to reduce the splashing noise, is this a bad idea?

Leave the hole uncovered, if you cover the hole it will sound like a toilet flushing. The water should rise and then fall in the overflow. Some people make something up so that they can ajust the air so that the water level stays at a constant level and it will be completly silent. It's not to hard, as long as you didn't glue that pvc cap on top to the durso?

The drain pipe's should be slightly below the water line so you are good there.

I did glue the cap on and drill a small hole in the top. the water seems constant, it does not rise and fall at all (unless i cover the hole)

I was just worried about the water level being at the top of the pipe, it would appair that its flowing at its maximum and any blockage or restriction would result in an overflow. but if thats normal, I won't worry so much.

my drains are 1 1/2" (x2) powered by a Gen-X PCX-40 (Mak4) 1190 gph pump at about 5' of head with 1" returns (x2)
