Dwarf eel eating my fish... ugh

I got a golden dwarf moray eel with the idea that it wouldn't eat my fish because there weren't any really small ones. However, after a couple weeks, my tiger pistol shrimp and orange spot goby are missing. Today, I didn't see my purple firefish, however it's possible it was hiding, but also possible it was lunch. Seems like all the fish that live in caves where the eel now makes its home are disappearing. Of course it is an eel and there's always a chance it'll eat stuff, but just felt like ranting.

kill it, and the guy who sold it to you....someone must pay for the little goby, pistol shrimp, and firefish...

Things to consider...

Not that I would doubt that an eel would eat your fish but....

Goby and shrimp pair, if 'threatened' will move their den to another location. Often, in an area that is NOT the best for your viewing pleasure ;) Mine did this from time to time. Look in the sides and back. You may be surprised.

Firefish are notorious jumpers. Especially when they feel threatened. Look on the carpet, the center brace, the back of filter boxes etc. Again, you may be suprised.

If, in fact, he's eating them, set him up in a species only tank and blame only the person who told you he'd not eat your other fish. He's just doing the "moray thang" and you can't blame him for doing what he was built to do.

Haha, right...

Yeh I considered all of that. I'm not sure the firefish is gone yet, sometimes he hides for weeks. However I haven't heard the pistol snapping. My solution at this point is to come up with cool fish that don't live in sand/caves that will fit in a small tank. Any suggestions?

My pistol shrimp stop snaping for a long time but I know he is still there because I see him coming out.

I guess only time will tell about what's in my tank. I guess that's part of the "coolness" of a reef tank, all sorts of things in there that you had no idea about. Someday when I break apart this tank I'll probably find tons of stuff living in there.

;)...yeah, Petco in Woburn just completed a seminar on how to sound like you actually know something to ignorant customers without any actual knowledge of the subject. Not to bash all petcos (or their employees!), but they actually had a tank full of aiptasia-covered rock with a price sticker for Curly-Q anemones $7.49 in Woburn. It gave me a good hearty laugh at the expense of the really weird/creepy fish department manager who was following me around.

I cant believe htey pay someone to be a mgr of fish

yeah, we get paid too much to follow people around and play with tanks and fish all day....the discount is nice...dream job, and i love it.
My biggest headache is telling the average Joe that Nemo doesn't live in a bowl.

lol, but i wouldn't tell a customer an eel wouldn't eat his fish
