End of game- Bryopsis (1) Vs. Higor (0!) - I will tear down my tank!!!

Higor, whichever route you choose I wish you luck in your decision and success.

I have heard of some cutting it from rocks with a razor and using a suction hose to pull it and spores from the affected area. Of course I believe that is the approach for small amounts and it sounds like you have a major issue.

Good Luck!

I am very sorry to hear this Hig!!! Do you have a refugium going with beneficial algae in it to help starve out the brio? None the less If you need a hand with anything please let me know and I am there.

That is terrible!! What a beautiful tank!!!!

I do not have anywhere close to the selection of coral that you have, but if you lose anything, feel free to PM me. I would be willing to donate some frags.

That's terrible. Was a great looking tank!

Before tanking down your tank and sterilizing everything -Would it be possible to set up a hospital tank for your corals and such, and run your main tank with an agressive skimmer, maybe set up a algae scrubber and lights out on the display? I would think that would starve the bryopsis of nutrients.

Thanks guys, I am still formulating a plan to quarantine and keep my fish and corals healthy. I pretty much have tried everything suggested here with the exception of dosing the whole tank with Peroxide and a Foxface/Rabbit fish. But like I stated before, even if I got something to eat the Bryopsis in the tank and rocks, it's EVERYWHERE by now. Plumbing, Overflow, Equipment, etc. If I don't take extreme measures, it's going to come back again...

I was debating whether to use Peroxide as a last resort in the whole tank, but I am not so sure anymore. I have had my Magnesium upwards of 2300 (Almost 3 gallons of Tech-M) for the past 1.5 months with no effect on the Bryopsis.

My SPS have taken the brunt of it. Most are either faded or lost their colors, though I haven't seen any negative effects on any of my Zoas/Pallys, Softies or LPS. Also lost my cleanner shimps and peppermint shrimps along with most of my snails...I'm just not sure I want to stress the corals further by dosing Peroxide. I have too many prized corals I would hate to lose...

Only solution I see to completely eradicate (or at least the one with the most chance) the Bryopsis is to treat and quarantine every piece of coral for a while, kill all the Live Rock, clean the Display Tank/sump/equipment as much as possible and as an extra precaution let the tank and equipment run with RO water w/ a high Dose of Peroxide for a long time. Maybe even Bleach…

It’s not going to be fun, but quitting is not an option here… :)

My Nitrates are close to 0. Phosphates undectable... My Skimmer is a SRO 5000SSS rated for 400G Heavy Bio-load, and as far as trying to starve the Bryopsis with light, well... I have Bryopsis growing in parts of my sump "Where the Sun don't shine" :p;)

PS: If anyone has a used (doesn't have to be perfect, just hold water) 75G or similar Reef Ready tank, please let me know. I will probably need one after the new year to set up as a temporary tank until I get this fiasco taken care of... Thnks

Good Attitude. Like they say... From the ashes greatness will grow. Something like that.

I would start with a couple/few lettuce nudis as suggested above. I would add a dozen true mexican turbos also...I would also try to remove one rock at a time, scrub it in a bucket of saltwater and pour hydrogen peroxide on the infected areas....rinse and return. Breakdown is too dramatic....Good luck!! Your phosphate and silica levels are prob not 0 because the algae is using it up and thriving.

That is a real bad breakout, Higor....I have seen several tanks this bad get a full breakdown as the only solution....

Normally I use Lettuce Nudibranchs and Tech M...and have been very fortunate that this has worked for me on tons of tanks without fail...but I get on it right away. But that method has never not worked for me (have done it to at least 60 tanks)
Another reason, I have started using "Real Reef" man made rock...none of the tanks I have used this stuff in have ever had any major algae outbreaks (on the rockwork)

That is unbelievable crap luck you must have a very rare strain and it would be interesting to see why yours wont die and so many other briopsis will die with tech M and H202 ........I do not know how to work a microscope but i wonder if there is some genetic mutation of your briopsis? Did you get the 3 galls of tech m all at once from same place? bad batch? who knows that blows man....I never heard of the tech M and H202 not work on bryopsis and I had done tons of reading about it before I had bombed my coral tank and eradicated it. When I squirted H202 directly on the gooped algae with the rock out of water only for a min and put right back in the tank... literally 2 days later it would be like near white disintegrating vanished and along with the high Tech M levels it would be toast -Good luck but Im sure ripping it all down bleach and RO soaking you will be fine in a couple months just a HUGE PITA

I hear u man, it is dramatic...But I fear necessary :(. I have tried Turbo snails, Lettuce Nudis, Sea Hare, Lawnmower Blennie... If someone on the other side of the world whispered "I have seen this eat Bryopsis" I have tried it (except a Rabitt Fish). The way I see it, if I have to breakdown my rock work, I might as well go all the way to make sure it won't come back!

I tried the Lettuce Nudis in the beginning B, but they weren’t eating it fast enough. By the time I used Tech-M I think it was too late. I even ordered a couple more gallons online after I grabbed the one from you…

The more I read about it, the more I get convinced that in my case a full break down is the only way… I don’t want to go through all the hassle of cleaning the display tank if I am going to miss a “little patch” of it somewhere in my plumbing, overflow and/or equipment just to see it again a few months down the road.

Plus, I can take the chance to do a few new things I have been thinking about it. I wish I didn’t have this problem (trust me, I have been mad/pissed/aggravated the past few weeks contemplating doing this) but since I do, I will just have to tackle it 100% face on and hopefully not have to re-live it again…

Yeah man, just my luck... Peroxyde does kill it. But I have to make a 50/50 solution with saltwater when I am cleanning frags, TWICE! Which is strong enough to kill the corals them selves. I have lost countless Zoas, LPS doing it. I don't even bother dipping SPS, it's always almost 100% loss.

I got half a gallon of Tech-M from Unique Aquaria and 2 gallons from Dr. Foster & Smith... My Magnesium has been @ 2300 for over a month now and nothing :(

Higor,

I have a 75 gal you can have for free.... Has a 1" hole in the bottom panel...just need to cap it with a bulkhead...come up to Tewksbury and grab it anytime you want...

Thanks for the article Dan, I came across that one a while ago. That was one of the reason I thought of dosing the tank with Peroxide...

Thanks so much B. I will keep you in mind if I can't find a Reef Ready one next month :)

Why don't you try a rabbitfish? I had an epic outbreak of Valonia that a gold spot rabbitfish wiped out in no time. It is worth a shot, rabbitfish eat almost any type of algae. It's better than going through the trouble of tearing your tank down. If you get a decent sized fish you would be surprised how fast they will clean a tank. And you don't know if it will work until you try.

Sorry to hear about this! I had it really bad before and I ended up breaking the tank down and cleaning the rock. Whatever your decision good luck and if you need any help give me a shout.

Yea Ive had bryopsis for nearly 6-7 months now and it was TAKING over the tank, literally. I almost broke down the tank (only 34g) but decided to try H202 while using Kent M as well, and a month if that into it and it seems to be all but gone. Im dosing 5ml of H202 a day directly into the tank, no carbon or any filter media, and only bi-monthly water changes. Its a full blown SPS tank, and honestly, my SPS has never looked better. I was worried because I have roughly 45 small SPS colonies and I would have been devastated if they all died, but hey, it worked!

Ill throw up some before and after pictures later today.
