Epoxy putty type?

jovreef

I'm the girl
Is there a certain type of epoxy putty to get or a type that could harm the tank?

Thanks in advance

I have heard of some that give off a bit of heat after mixing. The best I found is AquaScape construction putty, extra sticky formula and pink.

I have some of the Deltec stuff but haven't tried it yet, I hear it's the best though. I've used both the stuff they sell at the Home Depot and the other stuff (not Deltec) the LFS sells. They both worked about the same. Applying under water is a PITA since it doesn't stick well, but if you can apply it to a dry surface it's great.

You can use AquaMend, which is usually near the paint/caulking section in Home Depot. It's cheaper than most of the epoxy that you'll find in your LFS.
I've never used the Deltec product, so I can say how it compares to Aquamend.

Thanks everyone! I was gonna pick up a stick last night at home depot but I figured I'd make sure none of them had anything harmful to a tank in them first.

Great info on the pink one too! I had white before and that stuck out like a sore thumb! I was gonna grab a grey one this time.

make sure you keep an eye on your skimmer with the home depot stuff.
The lid of my skimmer was blowing off for three days when i used it.

OK thanks for the advice :) I usually apply the putty outside of the tank and let it sit for a min before putting it back inside so that cuts down on some of the mess. Benifits of a small tank ;)

Anyone ever tried mixing sand with the putty to give it a more natural look?

The deltec stuff cost more, however I have been very satisfied with the results. Not to mention, the pink color makes it near invisible next to coraline algae.

I use holdfast. Dries white.

You can purchase Aquamend pretty cheap in bulk. Aquamend works okay, but after you initially mix it it is 'softer' than I'd prefer. I don't particularly like the color (white) either. Try to use only sparingly in a functional tank. Best to use outside the tank if possible and add only after hardened. The ones made for the reef hobby are better (by better I mean less 'soft' after first mixing, not white in color, in general easier to handle), but they are about 2X or more the price, and I'm a cheap bast@#$.
