can anybody help me . i have a etss 800 skimmer and a iwaki 55 pump . i am having problem getting good dark foam . it sometimes is wet foam and sometimes nothing coming out . i have a valve between the pump and skimmer . should i leave it all the way open or half way open and should the waste gate be open all the way ?

when i open the valve (after the pump) all the way and the waste gate half way closed i get gallons of water . no foam

You have to fine tune it between both valves

Mine runs great with the valve after the pump open a little less than 3/4 & the valve before the sump a little more than 3/4

it is a simple thing with adjusting the height in the skimmer with the gate valve. Do you understand what the gate valve is trying to accomplish. I would start by turning the feed pump on full and opening the GV full. Leave for a few minutes. If the water is still high in the skimmer column with the gv open then the feed pump is to big. if it is lower than that you can start tuning the skimmer to work, yes they are temperamental but they do work well. You need to get the water level in the skimmer around 1/2 inch below where the water is injected. Small increments will be needed and monitor it. A little patience spent here will give you a great skimate. If as mentioned earlier the column is to high turning the pump down is such a waste of energy just get a smaller pump. Hope this helps.

Remove some bioballs from the mixing columns. You shall see a significant difference. I struggled with the same problem 7 years ago.

Good luck

I agree 100 % when you get it about i/2 up the tube only turn the gate valve in 1/4 turns.I would leave the bio balls in but if its a used skimmer replace them with new ones, and once a year then after.you will not see that much going on during the day so make an adjustment at night check it in the morning.
