ok guys i looked around and don't seem to see what i need to know. i am putting it out side my sump and when i put the valve on in the sump it is below the water level does this matter. because i have no room at all to even make the skimmer sit higher up or anything it like just makes in under tank. and before i start it up i want to make sure it will be fine to run like this. anyhelp would be great. pics are also great help.

how far under the water? If the valve is out of water but the output is in water, that should be fine.

to run at optimal effeciency...Above the water is recommended...When you flood the valve you cut down the skimmers effeciency 50%...Call John direct @ etss...he'll tell you the same thing!!!

I know this for a fact....I've had one in operation for well over 5 years..When the water level in the sump rises to high....it knocks down the foam production BIGTIME!!!!

the hole valve is like under water the dividers in my sump are tall as hell. only thing i can think of it putting a elbow on it to make it sit up higher in the sump. but would that be bad adding all that extra pipe to the end. kind of hard for me to explain i will take a pick tomorrow to show you what it looks like.

It's not just the valve that needs to be out of the water, so you can't just put an elbow on the valve and leave the box low in the water. The top of the skimmer box needs to be above the water level. Downdraft skimmers requires a LOT of water to go through them. If you don't have gravity working with you to pull the water through the skimmer you will have to seriously cut down on the flow of the pump, which will seriously cut down on the foam production as Brian stated.

I have an ETSS 800 with an Iwaki 55. The bottom of my skimmer is about 10" above the water level in my sump and I still have to cut back the pump a bit.

You'd be better off with a smaller skimmer like the PM Bullet that will give you clearance to raise it higher, or a recirc needlewheel which will let you go with much less flow through the skimmer.
