Evaporation Rates

Hey guys,

We've got our new 90 gallon DSA tank up for a few weeks now in CA. I'm running it open top (w/ clear mesh netting lid) - so I expected a good amount of evaporation.

With our ATO setup, it looks like I'm adding almost 1 gal of RODI a day. Display volume is 90gal, sump is another 30 gal.

Is that normal? How much do you top off per day during the winter months?

Sounds about right, I average a 5.5 gal auto top off tank every 5-6 days in my open top 90.

yep thats about right , depends on tank temp type of heat in house , etc . I add about 5-7 gallons a day in my basement system of 550 gallons you can wrap the sump with insulation to help a bit . That reminds me need to check the 90 sump lol

i have 3 tanks in the house- a 120 with 50g sump and 2 75 with about 30-50ga sump for each. so i added around 15g for top off. 15 gallon of water evaporated in the house. hopefully these avaporation dont cuase problem for the house and air that we breath daily.

Evaporation varies from tank to tank set up and season. But your evaporation rate sounds about right.
Keep in mind though, a larger surface area tank, ie. shallow tank with large footprint will have more evaporation than a tall tank with a smaller footprint. The more surface flow you have, the more evaporation you will have also. Running a fan in the summer time will also caused more evaporation.

sweet idea about insulating the sump. My basement is about 64*. That should help out with the heat a little. Think I'll cover it too.
