External durso question

Does the external T pvc piece need to be aligned like -| (tank on the left side, cap on the top, drain to sump on the bottom) for the durso to work properly (i.e. reduce gurgling) ? Or can it be aligned _|_ (tank on left, cap on top, drain to sump on right)? I'm thinking no - that in the latter case the section of pipe leading to the cap will just fill with water up to the tank level and not allow air to enter the drain pipe, but maybe it will work sorta like a venturi and let air get in?

The way my sump is positioned, the water has to go more horizontal than vertical, so the latter alignment would be better. Otherwise I'll just add an elbow like -L

You must be able to smell my brians smoking from all the thinking. I cannot, for the life of me, picture what you are saying. Any chance of a pic of the two tanks in relation to each other?

It should be mounted like -| otherwise it will not function as you stated above.
