OK,

Picked up a cleaner shrimp at the LFS today. Acclimated it, put it in the main tank - 15 minutes later he was sticking out of the brittle star.

A disappointment at best.

How long did you accclimate it? They can be real sensitive to acclimation from what I have heard. Mine were ok.

Shrimp have been the toughest for me.

Lost a peppermint, I think due to a water change perhaps lowering pH too much.

Most painful was a cleaner I lost (expensive!). He just seemed to stop mid-moult and that was the end of him.

Have since replaced with another peppermint. It's sort of a challenge to me now.

I had something similar happen to me a few months back. I purchased the cutest little yellow headed jawfish, I acclimated it and made sure everything was perfect to release him which included me setting up a nice rock pile on one end of the tank. I scoop him up slowly and carefully place him into the corner with the nice rock pile, he flies into the back of the rockwork and directly into the tentacles of a HUGE brittle star that resides in the back of the tank.

Total time in display............under 3 minutes  I was beyond upset :(

This is why I don't like brittle stars

Ok be honest, the 15 minute mark was a stretch there Eric ...it was less than 5 minutes!! But did learn a valuable lessons:
1. I hand feed the brittle star krill at mealtime(I know he will clean up the sand and eat leftovers...but this guy is HUGE)
2. Never introduce a crustacean after meal time:eek: (especially after a couple of days I didn't give the brittle a krill)
3. Everyone deserves one "fancy" meal in their life...but come on-the cleaner shrimp??!! I'd been waiting a while to get him and there are 3 pep's that live in the same rock with the brittle???!!! &!@%$
4. Never let small children watch you feed the tank-I'll be seeking therapy(it's a shame i like the starfish-I think?)

Yeah, I am not a fan of Brittle stars either...too opportunistic. We had one take a gorgeous baby Dragon Wrasse within hours of adding it.

For us, we added our Brittle Star because from all we read they were great detrious cleaners, etc. We found this to be true when he was small, he would come lumbering out at feeding time and clean up everything on the bottom and he would come out at night. However, once he got big and fat, he didn't come out at all...just stuck arms out and let food float into them. After he ate the Dragon Wrasse we evicted him.

Sorry for the loss of the Shrimp...that's lame.
