fine black hairs on sand bed

I have a four month old tank with a fine sand bed, ranging from 1/2 inch to 1 1/2 inches deep. Today I noticed some very fine black "hairs" about 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch sticking up from the sand. Each is alone... not like a clump of hair algae. I tried to suck them up with a baster, and discovered they were "rooted" straight down into the sand and were not easy to suck up. The surrounding sand came up into the baster, revealing that the black hair went further down -- the sand came up but not the black strand.

What is this? Algae? worm? good or bad? either way, they are kind of ugly so if there is something that eats them, what might I try?

Thanks.

Not yet. My plan was to suck them out and then photograph. However, when I examined my cup of sand (since that's mostly what I sucked out), I couldnt find them. I suspect they will reappear and then I will photograph as best i can.

I haven't quite figured out how to take good photos of things in my tank yet.
