Fluval Edge as a nano? Tanks at work?

I've been thinking about setting up a nano tank on my desk at work once the 58 is completely established. All I'd want to keep in it is some rock, maybe a few soft corals (zoas, leathers) and a group of sexy shrimp or a cleaner shrimp.

Has anyone ever run the fluval for something like this without major modification? Can't have a sump or any sort of modification that could leak since it would be right near my $3000 computer and the boss wouldn't like a fried apple very much ;). I can completely start it up from things that I have in my current tank, but I'm wondering how well it would maintain in a tank designed for freshwater.

I guess my other question is... How do those of you that have tanks at work monitor/maintain them if you don't work every day? I like the fact that the Fluval is pretty much sealed, as I don't work weekends and evaporation could be an issue. Water changes wouldn't be a problem. I'd just mix up a gallon the night before and bring it in with me. Do all my changing/testing at lunch and keep a gallon of RODI in a jug under my desk for top-off.

My only fear is power failure over the weekend. It can get cold in here if there's no heat, as it was once a giant warehouse that half of it was converted into an office area.

Or should I just stick with freshwater shrimp? :(

Not sure where you work, but you might want to check "the rules". Some of the larger places I worked at were very strict about what you could/could not have in your cubi-prison. Anything that plugged in, that wasn't provided by them, was pretty much verboten. Something like a nano tank combining electricity and water would probably send them into convulsions.

You should consider getting a job where you work from home and build a nice 120G system in your office. :)

Yeah! Like a fire hazzard.

My "cubi-prison" doesn't allow for even a tiny Betta tank. I suspect some lawyer combined with an insurance company rep came up with the idea that the liability of a Betta bite or a 1'x1' wet spot on the carpet is too high a risk to take.

It's not a huge company, but I would definitely ask first :) If they convulse, I'll just get a betta, hide his tiny little heater under the gravel and set up the shrimp tank at home :D Kidding. I need something of a swimmy nature to keep me company during the day in my cubi-prison, though!

Although when I was at krystal clear last night, I was checking out the aquatop nano tanks...

Nice looking, and to my surprise... uses less than 9 watts (less heater, but in a tank that size you don't need much)! Also comes in 3 and 4 gallon sizes. Neat looking regardless of where I set it up.

I know where you are coming from. I would be nice to look at something other than a computer screen all day. Sometimes the fish even have more character than the people you have to deal with.

I looked into getting a 29g Biocube for my cube and have just the right spot for it.

Talked myself out of it after wondering who would take care of it when I was out or away for a week.

Maybe in the future.

All of my fish have more personality than some of the people I work with :p

I think their only concern would be "does it use a lot of electricity and does it have a timer?".

The only thing that's making me wonder, especially wonder if saltwater is a good idea is the weekends. I'd have to have a timer for the lights, for sure. How much evaporation would I get? What if something went wrong? A lot of questions and a tank that small is going to be incredibly fragile in terms of water quality.

I was thinking about setting up a biocube 29 at home on the main floor, but the price on them is a little more than I'd like to spend on a "secondary tank".

i've had one for going on 2 years now...maybe 3? (bad memory lol ) regardless i didn't drill mine or have a sump. its doable. I've kept a reef sucessfully. pm me if you want me to send you pictures :) its doable just takes patience and attentiveness.

Ps. i dont top off for a few days at a time usually 3 days , mostly out of pure lazyness, havne't really had an issue. I also dont really keep fish just coral and inverts such as conchs, pom pom crabs, sexy shrimps, urchins etc. etc. etc. etc. lol I sometimes have a fish in there temporarily before it moves to a bigger tank but generally its a no fish zone just because it allows me to be more lax about maintenance :P

I had a nano on my desk for a bit. Didnt care for the maintenance and changed over to a freshwater fluval edge. Easy to maintain.
