Frag Growout Tank Before Main Tank

Hey guys! Been years since I had a tank. Looking to build a ~120 peninsula in wall as part of a kitchen reno happening in 12-18 months.

In the meantime, I was thinking of building a frag / grow out tank. My thought is I could buy and grow small sps frags into colonies in the mean time and use it as a quarantine tank for when the new tank is up and running. I ‘d likely plumb it into the main tank with the option to isolate it as needed.

Any downsides I am not thinking about here? There’s likely some additional cost associated to this approach, but thinking it may make sense in the long run.

If it's plumbed into the main system you might be able to realistically use it as a QT tank. In theory you could isolate it with valves if you only want to use it for a coral QT tank but even then I wouldn't risk it. A QT tank for fish with medicating would make it not work as well.

I think a lot of people use plumbed in tanks into their system and having a dedicated frag/grow-out tank is a great idea and I plan to add one to my dream tank setup. I already have two extra tanks plumbed into my setup now with no issues.

You should also take into the account of cycling the new display before opening the valves to the QT take. I made the mistake of adding a 30 gallon frag tank to my 250 gallon system and had a to fight both tanks cycling again.

Interesting things to think through. Thanks for the input! Seems like it could easily be plumbed in as a frag / grow out tank, but maybe not the best idea to use it for a qt tank.

if just using as a QT grow out I would keep it separate. I run a 28G fragrance tank separate to my IM 170EXT system. Not big on having to troubleshoot multiple systems as part of 1 systems when issue(s) arise.
