They actually do fine if you take care of them the proper way. Unfortunately most people put them in mixed reefs where they don't feed nearly enough food.
People that have the most success with these (no matter the color) are people that feed a TON in non-photosynthetic tanks. I mean like 15 feedings a day. These people typically do 50% water changes weekly to combat the excess nutrients from the feedings. Some people are doing 100% water changes weekly!
That is why these have poor survival rates in a typical reef.
I have been doing a fair amount of research on goniopora in the last few days. There is actually a website .org for the gonis. Read a few good articles written by a Justin Credabel. Good stuff. He even designed a food for these little critters. I picked up a red and a purple goni from sea creatures last week. I have been feeding it phyto and zooplankton daily.
