anybody feed their overflow into your skimmer? i wanna try it but will prob have to modify my skimmer.. not sure if i want to do that cuz if the project does not work im out a skimmer as well.. I wanna try it so bad since i have the right GPH coming out of the overflow tube and has PLENTY of bubbles in it from the overflow tube vent hole... By my research it says i would need a 7/8 tip inside my skimmer and now its 1/2 and im sure id have to increase the exit pipe on the skimmer too.. is all this hassel worth it or should i just stop being cheap and get a pump for it?

What kind of skimmer? If it's a beckett, downdraft or aquac it will need more pressure than gravity to work right.

I have a ASM G3 that a recirc modded directly attached to my overflow.
I don't think you'll get the bubbles you need without sending the water through a venturi to add air.
Here's mine in the basement sump. The T before the skimmer is so I can divert water over to the reverse durso when I want to empty my skimmer cup.

its a good size Venturi skimmer. John this is the skimmer that i bought at the Auction last year, the collection cup was broke off and you told me bout the acrylic glue. its fixed and the tank has been running for a few months now.. i would love to get this to run off the overflow if at all possible. im trying to run this system energy efficiently

The Skimmer is 23 inches tall and its 6 1/2 inches wide body

Stingy theres no pump on that just gravity fed? think i can get enough pressure from gravity to run the skimmer in the sump under the tank? its a 5 foot drop.. im thinking i can if i increase the diameter of the inlet to the skimmer to 7/8.. which in-turn i would have to increase the exit pipe to.. and if this project doesnt work ive ruined my skimmer... what to do?

8Niz,

No there's a Sedra pump with a pin wheel impeller.
A recirculation mod basically takes the water from the body of the skimmer and keeps running it through the venturi.
Instaed of taking water from the sump and running it through the venturi once and then into the body of the skimmer.
I requires 2 new holes to be drilled in the body. One for the loop of the water back through the venturi. And one for the water to enter the skimmer body from the overflow.
What kind/brand of skimmer do you have?

Its a "Coral Reef" brand... i guess the company switched names awhile back

Oh yea, How are ya?

Coral reef is coral reef aquarium in seekonk. Jeremy the owner used to get the early octopuss skimmers branded "coral reef" and he sold them out of his store before they were commonly available straight from octopuss. It's extremely similar to the ASM that bob is running, and just like Bob said you would want to do a recirculating mod on it, then it could be fed off your drain, but it would still use the existing pump to mix the air and water. It would use the same amount of electircity as it does now, but it might skim a little better with the recirc mod and being fed directly from a drain.

My DIY skimmer is fed by gravity....but relies on a pump and venturi for bubbles.

Siphon box splits and some water goes into the skimmer. Level is controlled by adjustable height output.
