Non-member
i bought 2 clown fish at an age where they would not have been sexed, i have had them for 4 months now and they have sexed themselvesl, what should i do to encourage breading?

thanks, joe

Dip them in a little egg whites first..

OMG! LMAO! I was thinking the same thing, but couldn't quite put it into words. That's the best laugh I've had in a long time.

I don't know how to encourage breeding in clowns. I think you just have to let nature take it's course.

Yup, keep things stable, feed them well and let nature take it's course. It can take quite a while.

One thing that will definately set them back is changing the tank around, so it's best to get your aquascaping set up and then don't do any rearranging (over years that is).

Do they hang out together already? What kind of Clowns?

My Ms. Clown wouldn't let Mr. Clown anywhere near HER anemone for 6-8 months (hard to remember). He was banished to the other end of the tank. Then one day she let him move in. A month or so later, along came the first batch of eggs. And it's been every couple of weeks ever since. They are Clarkiis.

they are ocellaris clowns, they do hangout for most of the day and sometimes they are not together, what is the best type of anemone for them, does it matter if its bubble tip, or is there any particular type i should get?

i think bubble tip nems are the best....rbta are real nice...they glow in your tank...they are a bit expensive though... frank180reef has some nice nems. he is a brs member hit him up if ur interested in getting one.

Percs and ocellaris don't naturally host in bubble tips, but they frequently do take to them in captivity. The nems that they do naturally host in tend to range from somewhat to very much more demanding to keep (carpets, magnifica).

Bubble tips end up being a great option because they are so hardy/sucessful in captivity.

ive tryed pretty much every type of nem with my false's and non of them have worked. then i put in a Duncan frag and my clowns pair with it :P my luck lol

dont know if this is animal cruelty but i usually chase my clowns into or near the nem so that can at least see it or touch it....and it has worked quite well

Breading mixtures can be made of breadcrumb, flour, cornmeal, and seasoning that the clown fish to be breaded is dredged in before cooking.:p
Thrust me,I've made the same mistake.

Clownfish can host any number of corals, anemones, and things. I have heard of clownfish hosting power heads before. The best bet is to keep tank stable as far as rock work and introducing new inhabitants. My wrasse can bother my clowns when they are getting close to one another. Also they need a smooth surface for eggs to stick, having the right environment helps "set the mood". Also you should think of all clowns to be males, unless they are the dominant fish, then thats your female. It takes alone time for this sex change process to take place even if your fish are "sexually mature". When you place two random "males" in a tank it takes a while just to establish dominance, which is what cause hormonal changes in the fish. Helps if you choose a more sexually dimorphic pair, such as a larger male and smaller one, may help process along.

My clowns host my frogspawn.
If you want something that wont wander around and kill stuff,a frogspawn makes a good host.

My black and white clowns hosted my 8 inch clam.....my maroon clown i had hosted my elegance coral. The 2 skunk clowns i had hosted my 12 inch monster toadstool.

I got my clarkiis and RBTA at the same time and so I put them in the same QT setup. So when I finally put them in the DT, she had long since claimed the nem as hers. So from there it was just a matter of the two clowns taking months to negotiate the final terms of their domestic arrangement.

Am I the only one who's clown actually host in a BTA?

My Clakrii's did and my Ocellaris do now..

The clarkiis would lay eggs like clockwork on the overflow.. I've never seen the occellaris lay though.

Nope, Both Our true and false pairs host BTA's. The Onyx have a RBTA but They are all over the tank, Nasty little critters. I thought the true percs were mean they have nothing on the Onyx...

I've got a pair that host in my GBTA. Haven't seen them lay eggs yet though......having been waiting on/hoping for that.
