Help Hi Collectors-potential Ban!!!!!!!!!!!!

Do you know why they are putting this ban in place though? There might be a good reason for it.

I think there are probably very good reasons for passing this bill.
Right now I am for the bill. Anything that helps cut down on the overfishing of our oceans is a good thing. So a yellow tang might cost $ 50 instead of $10 deal with it. But hey maybe some people like being part of the reason why species go extinct.

2 sides of the argument...over harvesting vs. controlled harvesting

I think this is a good thing. This bill might force more suppliers to start trying to breed more fish. I know the industry has already started to aquaculture more fish and I think this is what should be done. If the worst that comes out of this bill is that we have to pay more money for fish that's fine by me. The reefs are already in trouble and this would be another way to protect them. I'd hate to go scuba diving or snorkeling on a reef in 10-20 years and see only half the fish I used to.

I also think this is a good thing. Now vendors will have to raise yellow tangs just like clowns instead of ripping them from the ocean. I am all in favor of renewing our resources instead of taking and not replacing.

I wish they would take 10% of the raised fish and corals from vendors and repopulate the oceans.. wouldn't that be a novel idea. Giving back...

I doubt there is any over fishing going on. Why don’t they just follow what fishing laws are in place and put an effective maximum collection of 5 YT ban in place once every 5 years letting the fish repopulate? Fish can replenish their numbers in 1-2 seasons and there is really no reason to freak out and put an effective ban on these fish. Anyways I doubt this gets passed as it stands, the bill is far to vague. This is probably just a test to see how much support it receives.

There is a difference in raising something that spawns regular in the home aquarium on rocks or mouth broods than raising something that spawns in the open ocean in huge groups that has never been recorded to spawn in captivity.

That being said, there is (or at least was 4 years ago) a company that does collect misc. fry out of the ocean & raise it. They dont really know what they have till it grows :) I thought that was a pretty neat effort to produce more captive raised fish.

i think im for the bill.

I added my two cents.
Another knee jerk law.

LOL. I love the OP of the RC thread.

We all must work together to stop this senseless bill! Otherwise these stupid colorful decorations for my house will cost more and I don't want to pay more for my home decorations!

I've always been on the green side but there doesn't seem to be any viable reason for this bill. If there was a real issue with the fishery I would happily pay 100$ for a yellow tang but there seem to be no facts to back up the need for the bill.

Proper management of fisheries is a good thing. This doesn't seem like proper management tho.. as mentioned it's far too vague, doesn't give option for what happens after recovery, and without stats the bag limit is very arbitrary.

Hope I'm not out of place by mentioning it, but has everyone who has commented on this read the actual bill, or just someone's synopsis of it? IMHO it's usually better to get as close to the actual source and form your own opinion...

The bill is posted online for everyone to see, its also probably the shortest bill I have ever seen in my life. Its about half a page long :p

there is a link to it in the RC link.

You should read Charles Delbeek's response. As with many fisheries issues the
problem has been ignored for too long. The bill needs a lot of work but at least it is a start. Instead of opposing it, people should be discussing better legislation. I also included a link to a study. If managed correctly there
is a level of sustainable collection that would prevent issue to the reefs.
Removal of herbivores has caused major issues in other reef systems.

As someone who deals with over regulation in the Financial Industry I'm very wary of regulation for the sake of regulation. If this bill were reworked to something that was actually intended to help I would support it.

over regulation in the Financial Industry:rolleyes:

Government regulation is necessary in situations of limited
resources. If you let greed control the market you get
fish populations destroyed or subprime mortgage collapse.
