Help Hi Collectors-potential Ban!!!!!!!!!!!!

There is already alot of govt regulation on this in hawaii, they have already passed legislation setting aside no fish zones and have been collecting data for 10 years.. they just need to properly enforce what they have already put into law. Supposedly this bill was written by someone named "snorkel bob" who likes to grandstand alot. There is some good info in the RDO thread in the industry section as well. Again, I'm not saying there should be no limits, but use some science in setting the limits, and make them flexible for when the fishery recovers.

Ok so when are they going to start? I'm with Nate on this one. I'm a Republican and I think the idea that these collectors are going to be responsible is hilarious. There will always be some guy who needs money and will go out and capture the remaining fish Like any job there is a bad seed thrown in there somewhere.but to ruin the lively hood of many HI collectors based un the usumption they are evil poachers is absurd... ill use the lobster fishery again as an example im sure a lobsterman somewhere in ME got caught selling short lobsters or a vnotch this yr.would you shut down the hole fishery over it ?this is where the goverment can come in. fine him sanction him, burn him at the stake, but a lesson would be learned.Fish science... but ill will use cows in a feild (cause we can see them) if you had 3 thosand cows in a field separated in 30 areas and you can only take from 6 of the areas for barbecues of course there will be less but does this make the cow extinct ?

But the lobster gauge is not industry self-regulation. The Marine Patrol enforces it. Yes, any number of fisherman are caught each year with short lobsters. (Actually, this year the chief of the ME Warden Service resigned because he got caught with short bugs! :)) And the marine patrol will prosecute those violators. But if there is no law regarding the rules of collection (as in HI), how are you going to fine anyone? You're arguing against making a law imposing limits on collection (not shutting it down) by saying that poachers will be fined. But as far as I can tell, there's really no poaching in HI because there are virtually no laws regulating collection. The permit is free, and you can take all you want! Maybe the specifics of the law need fine-tuned, but I think it's hard to argue with the need for some sort of limits on collection, just like the ME laws on short, long, and egger lobsters.

Would you say that "local extinction" is not an ecological problem to be avoided? Cows is really a bad example. A) because we put cows in pastures - they're domesticated. and B) removing a cow from a pasture is unlikely to upset the ecology of that pasture. It's not a natural ecosystem. Now, the Yellow tang, for example, is presumably a part of the complex reef ecosystems it inhabits. If you remove a large portion of the yellow tangs from a dozen of the reefs that it inhabits in HI, I think it's reasonable to be concerned that those ecosystems might be disrupted, causing broader consequences. You insist on having scientific data supporting conservation (despite that which has already been provided in this thread), but should not the same or greater burden be put on harvesting? Conservationists must prove that depleting a species is a bad thing? How about collectors have to prove that depleting fish stocks isn't going to cause any harm? That seems to make more sense to me, frankly.

Fish and Game makes sure the lobstermen obied buy it.There are laws for collection of yt and others and that they can only collect in 6 spots. indusrty can come up with great ideas to protect there resource, there far better suited to do this then some politician in washington and a dive buisness in washington state

Hey Jake, to quote someone, try hitting the "quote" button. That will separate your text from the previous post. It'll be a lot easier for people to see where someone else's comments end, and your comments begin.

Washington DC has nothing to do with this law. It's a STATE bill. It's in the Hawaii Legislature.

I pay enough for my fugu already.:p
Addicting.....yeah think?lol
It used to be:
Get home, walk in the house, pet dog, kiss wife....and how was your day?
Now it's,screach in the driveway, trip on the dog,get out of the way.........how's the fish/coral doing?(nose pressed to glass).:D

Now that was the best comment in this entire ridiculous conversation! LMAO!!
