help with external skimmer

i have seen it drilled on either side (left or right). just enough off the ground for the pump to connect to the sump.

maybe im wrong but will the return line from the skimmer set the water level in the sump? because i heard the drain line from the skimmer has to be a straight line or downward angle?

you set your own water level in the sump by have the glass at a curtain hight, and by adding water to the return section

you should prob start with what type of pump are you feeding the skimmer and how big is your sump before anyone can really help you. Pics would be good too

What kind of skimmer? If the output is high enough, and or you have room to raise the skimmer, IMO it's easiest and makes the most sense to have the return from the skimmer go in over the top of the sump so you don't have to drill anything for it.

The feed to the pump would go wherever it fits, but the ideal location would be close to where the water drains in from the display.

etss 600.... so your saying that skimmer would have to be higher then the sump .....if not the return will have to be drilled?

Unless the skimmer is IN the sump, then yes. The output of the skimmer will not go uphill.

If the skimmer output is lower than the top of the sump, then you need to drill a hole in the sump for it.
