LR is very expensive, Look into dry rock. Marco at Fishy Buisness I hear has nice stuff.Also,there are a lot of online places to get it too.

$250/45lbs, Thats over 5.50 a lbs still for live rock. Most LFS's I have been to range between 5-12/lbs for rock. I wouldnt consider it the deal of a lifetime thats for sure.

So far the best deals I have seen are here. Ppl breaking down large tanks allows you to pick up LR at half the price.... And the LR out of a reefers tank is going to be a LOT nicer than that out of any LFS.

I just picked up over 100lbs of liverock, with 2 RBTA and a brown BTA, Hairy Green mushrooms, and some Colt corals for what your looking at spending on 45lbs of rock...

Look around, make offers to ppl breaking down and selling setups... You will get much more for your $$ if you can wait a bit till the right deal presents itself.

I've seen lots of rock for sale at a bunch of stores. I would say that the average price is around $8.99/lb. $5.50/lb is a pretty good deal from a store. I find it kind of funny though that I had over 200lbs of nice live rock for sale and dropped the price all the way down to $2.00/lb and nobody was interested. I sold all but 70lbs to I think 3 people. Now that it isn't for sale anymore, everybody seems to be looking for rock again. I still have the 70lbs sitting in a tub in my living room, but I think I'm going to stick it in my new tank.

That would be fine, Base rock would color up nicely in no time at all. You should be able to find base rock for $2-3 per lb. pretty easily.

As for the LR your were quoted a price on that a pretty good deal. I know who you were quoted by and $5.50 per lb. is about $3 less per lb than I have seen it at some LFS's

Sometimes LR is hit or miss when people are looking for it.

As for the BR & LR comparison I have 205 lbs. or premium base rock from reeferrocks DELIVERED TO MY DOOR for under $300!

I realize it was lower than what they normaly charge but i already have about 600 bucks into a 50 gallon and i still need to get lr salt power heads sand and plumbing the wife keeps looking me like i'm nuts!

Thats rediculous. At any given time you can find it for less than $4 a pound online WITH shipping. I've seen it as low as $2.99/lb shipped.


Most of my rock was picked up in the forums, or was dry rock

To save money, you should go with 80% dry rock which you can easily get for $1.99/lb and add rest of 20% with live rock. In couple months your dry rock will have life and be similar to the live rock.

That's a little pricey for a box rate. I bought a 40# box of Kaelini from my LFS for about $160.

I would try to be patient,as mentioned above the best deals you'll find will be people breaking down their tanks. I picked up live rock for my nano and 46 from other members for $3.00/lb.Good luck!

you have only just begun. if it makes you feel any better, im more than three grand deep on a 58 gallon. if your upset about 600 bucks, then you might want re-evaluate the hobby that your pursuing. not to scare you off, but the expenses of the hobby only grow as your tank, or tanks grow.
