i have paid up to 15 per pound, and to me some of the crazy shapes and structure was worth every penny.
something to keep in mind,
rock from your LFS is normally cycled and you have the ability to cherry pick just what you want. you don't get the same when you mail order or buy in bulk. IMO 8.00 or less per lb is a pretty good price from the LFS.
you'll find there is always a deal to be had if you look hard enough but then you run a big risk of introducing all of the prior owners problems into your tank. i know i have gotten something nasty from every "used" buy i have picked up.
aptasia, valonia, manjano's, flat worms.... the list goes on, if you do find a cheap place for live rock just be mindful that you know what parasites and problems to avoid.
you get what you pay for.
either "live" or dry, you'll find pro's and cons. its all what your willing to sacrafice to get it.
