I would suggest reading Dr. Ron Shimek's article on them http://www.reefkeeping.com/issues/2003-06/rs/feature/index.php However, in my humble experience, I have had great luck with 1-2" sand beds and let my skimmers and live rock handle the rest. I still have lots of critters growing in the sand even with only 2".
