How deep should my sandbed be in my refugium?

What is the average depth or does it not matter?

I just built one for a 240 and will be using between 4 and 6 inches of sand.

well it all depends on what your goals are...

if your into a DSB then 4-6" will do. I would suggest reading Dr. Ron Shimek's article on them http://www.reefkeeping.com/issues/2003-06/rs/feature/index.php

However, in my humble experience, I have had great luck with 1-2" sand beds and let my skimmers and live rock handle the rest. I still have lots of critters growing in the sand even with only 2".

What about doing no sand in the refugium and just having a few rubble piles? I thought I'd try that this time and see how it works.
