Nost kits use abrasives (sandpaper/compounds), you start with a coarse abrasive and work your way to to fine until the scratches are no longer visible to the naked eye. Basically you are taking away material until it is the same thickness as the depth of the scratch.
A good example of a very fine abrasive - Toothpaste.
