how low has your Mg gotten

well i was at peter's (pvh) the other day picking up some frags and i was telling him how i just cant get my calcium above 350 for some reason, buy my alk was stable at 10

well he told me i should buy a Mg test kit and low and behold it was really low

it was at 700ish...i was told 1300 is where it needs to be..pretty bad

any one have anything lower..

right now im dosing about a 1/4cup of this builder stuff a day, along with my 2 part

I think mine has been down around 1000 before. but never that lowWhat type of salt do you use?

i was at about 500 when i started reefing now i dos tekM i'm at 1200 1300 cal at around 400 500 up and down but still good little hight at 500

lol would be my first guess too.

It could be from lack of water changes too though...

yea instant ocean..but i barely ever do water changes.so its probably just me not the salt..i need to get better about that...

i do 20% once a month, 25 is even better


also- i find im much more apt to do water changes if the process is simplified. (already having water made... easy to remove water from my sump, easy to pump it back in, etc.)

20% here as well .mag is usally supp 1x every month or so with esv. Another thing that'll make it go low like that is kalk

I supplement mag weekly. 1-2 handfuls of mag flake in my topoff water

I watch my xenia for alk, dose as necessary, and also dose 1-2 handfuls of dow flake weekly. every week or 2 I actually check levels.

Tis the season to find some mag flake (or mag pellets) and epsom salts

I've been below 1000 before, It takes a LOT of supplement to bring mg up that much.

Also, IO is normally low in mg. If you use IO your Mg will be a bit low to begin with, then if your not big on water changes it will get even lower.

Dripping kalk will also amplify the problem indirectly because it will maintain ca and alk, but your corals and coralline will be consuming Ca, alk AND mg.

i had the same issue.. started growing cyno in my remote fuge.. once i got the MG up it went away! wierd!!

Lowest mine got was around 900 after our honeymoon (no dosing from family didn't trust them) I add mag once a week if that and usually do 10% weekly to bi-weekly water changes...

I've never seen it below 1200 in my system.
But I keep it as high as 1500.
Water changes will do very little to increase magnesium if the salt mix has low amounts to begin with.I.O. is notorious for this.Magnesium depleats very slowly from system water.I now us a mix of Tropic Marin and I.O.,but suppliment with Randy's Mg. as well.
