How many gallons before a nano is no longer a nano?

Having no steadfast rule works too. I think people know if they have a nano or not lol

definition of nano

I don't like nanos lol but under 30 gallons I would say

we don't really care what you like ;D

in all seriousness, nanos are either a stepping stone or an option for those of us with less budget/space than the other half.

I always understood a nano as 30g and smaller, but would be willing to include up to 34g into our exclusive group of aspiring/experienced aquarists.

hi everyone, I'm Mike and I'm a nano-holic.

everyone: "HIIII MIIIKE"

I think the most common answer would be 35 gallons because the biggest all-in-one nano that I know of is the RSM 130which is 34 gallons. From what I remember, the all-in-one tanks like Biocubes is what started the whole saltwater nano trend. IMO anything under 50 is a nano and anything under 5 is a pico.

Dakar652, for those of us who frequent the nano forums and have several different size tanks, I would say it's harder to keep a nano tank than a full size tank. Anything you do or add to a nano tank makes a huge difference because the volume of water is so small. There is no room for error. One drop too many and you've messed up your parameters. Although it may be considered a beginner or stepping stone size, if you can maintain one over several years, you're probably a better reefer than you think.

good to hear that we are going to have a nano forum soon. I plan to setup a nano in a few months as well.

If you keep up with WC's, don't feed heavily, and keep a light bio-load they are not that hard to keep. I had a BC29 for 3yrs and all I ever did was a 5 gal WC every week. Granted it had no SPS but did have a clam. Boy I miss that tank.

could not agree more. I'm in the process of introducing kalkwasser to my system through my ATO, and I'm having to be extra cautious concerning PH. haven't had any problems just yet, but I'm also using half the recommended dose of calcium hydroxide so as to introduce the chemical slowly and not shock my system. I'm also adding it at night (ATO is on a timer opposite my skimmer) when the PH levels are at their lowest.

the real key seems to be finding livestock that is able to withstand fluctuations in parameters without dying. I do my best to keep everything steady, but things inevitably happen and sometimes you just have to roll with the punches.

REALLY looking forward to this nano forum as well.

Looking forward to this new forum.. I have a RSM 130D (34 gallons) for last 3.5 yrs.. IMO anything less than 40 gallons is a nano..

Like others have said, I would assume under 40, but I would leave it up to the posters. I don't think we need another rule. Its bad enough people being flagged for not doing this or that, but now thinking there tank is a nano when it REALLY isn't. HOW DARE THEY!!!

I am going to a 60 from a 120, and that is going to seem like a nano, but is it?

Derek

Have we reached a verdict? I vote 34 and below to be fair to the other aio dudes/dudettes

Soooooo...when can we post new threads concerning nano stuff that only us nano freaks will understand?

Do you not see a the tab for "post new thread"? You should be able to start new threads anytime.

Generally 37-40g, but then what are you going to cut off discussion at Pico reefs?

Does it matter it someone feels it is a Nano? Then so be it. How complicated does this really have to be? The Nano community is a well defined in and of itself I doubt there is going to be much of an issue other than the occasional post in the wrong forum error.

actually thought you were just being a jerk because I didn't see the 'post new thread' button like I normally see.

I then realized I wasn't signed in. :P

so for the record, you're not a jerk.

Haha, I can see how my post could be read like that.

I actually set this forum up Sunday, so my comment was meant to read like "let me know if you can't see that option because that would mean I need to fix something" and NOT "what are you, blind?" :D

I agree with Greg here, I don't think we need a rule. Members can police themselves on this, and is someone really wants to call their 40g a "nano" what's the harm?

Hidden agenda spoiler - I started this thread hoping that a discussion would end up being better than a rule. We could always sticky this thread and call it a day :)
