Hi all,
Would you please help me identify, how heavy can a 65 gallons tank hold ? I already filled it with 80 lbs of sands and full tank of water. Im afriad the tank will crack if I add too many rocks.
You can add as much as you want assuming its silicone tight. And when stack your rocks make sure there stable so you don't have any rock spills because that can crack your glass
I don't think you have to worry about it to much. In my 125g tank, I had a 6 inch sandbed and probably over 300 lbs of live rock. I also had a 75g tank that was completely filled with live rock while it cured. These tanks are made and designed to hold quite a bit. Sorry I dont have exact numbers but you will be fine with whatever you put in it.
You dont really have to worry about the weight of the rocks, you will never be able to fit enough in there to have to worry about it. Like someone else said, just make sure they are stable so they can't shift.
As far as sand, I have 20lbs in my 20 high and probably around 60lbs in my 46 and they are both maybe 1 1/2 deep.
The mass of a gallon of salt water is 8.556 lbs. Sixty five gallons would be 556.14 lbs.... you would also need to figure the mass of your tank and the rock to determine the maximum mass that your floor would hold. Most tanks are ok as the mass is spread out over a couple of feet.
This mass does not change anywhere in the universe you put it. Weight on the other hand is the gravitational pull on an object's mass. On the moon your 65 gallons of sea water would weigh 94.36 lbs.
You should be able to put in the amount of rock that you want. It will displace some of the water and be fine. Just make sure that the rock is secure. If it falls and hits the glass it can cause cracks. Some people drill holes and link their rocks together with non metal plastic rods. Other, just place the rock so that it is secure. Leave places for fish to hide and swim through.
Good luck and hope the setup of your tank works well
Tom
