How to keep a skimmer from over-flowing?

Any opinions?

It seems that my skimmer loves to overflow -- it's a relatively new ReefDynamics 150. I know for a fact that the water level has not changed; we built our sump, so that the water level in the skimmer section is always stable.

Yet, every once in a while the damn thing over flows creating havoc everywhere. Last night it started over-flowing, which resulted in a water level drop in the return section, which resulted in air bubbles being shot out into our DT, which resulted in our brand new clam trying to commit suicide ... literally! he jumped off of the rocks! (yes, he's fine now ... just a little traumatized ...)

Air bubbles is one thing, but I worry, that if something like this happens once we have our ATO installed, then we'll be coming home to a flooded living room!

So! any ideas? :)

I had the same issue.

I raised it alot with egg crates untill it stopped overflowing. After almost a week it calmed down and I gradually lowered it. Now it's just sitting on the bottom of my sump Skimming perfectly. I think being a new skimmer these things happens.

Hope this helps. I know how frustrating it is to have it overflowing everywhere in the sump and going to the DT can be!

Hm... Ours is about 3-4 months old though... How much longer??

We have it raised using egg crates so that it is at recommended depth... And still the bugger loves to overflow

My tank was a little over a month old when I got my used Vertex in-100 from another reefer here in the club. I had it in the recommended water depth, but it didn't work. It only stoped overflowing when I raised it a lot more. I also took the elbow pipe piece from the Skimmer's output to aleviate any back pressure that could be causing the cup to overflow.
Also make sure ur air tube is not blocked and the pump is clean. Trust me, I had a dark few weeks trying to get it working like it should!
I also noticed that anything I did to the tank, liked add rock, sand, any additives would change how the skimmer reacted for a few days. Those are all things to watch for.
