I am really getting fed up with this southdown sand

The fish are constantly stirring up the sand creating a clouded up tank. I am forever basting sand off the corals and rockwork.

You sure the fish are doing it and its not a flow related problem? It may then be a fish problem and not a southdown problem.

How long has the southdown been in? even after a thorough rinsing, detritous (sp) etc. settles into the sand and that is what is getting stirred up. I went from a crushed coral base to southdown, and I had that problem with the CC, and I know I will the southdown once smaller crap gets settled into it.....

Yea!

The tank has been up a year now. I have the flow pretty well under control from stirring up the sand, it's definitely the fish causing the problems.

I have a marron clown that does that. ill never buy one of those again.

I rinsed my sand and added it to the tank, Waited 2+ weeks then drained the tank removed 70lb of rock just to take out the sand, Every little thing set it off. Someone said once it livings up things will settle. Besides it was too fine and really didn't like the look of it.

Southdown

Good evening, Does anyone know where I can purchase some Southdown currently? I have been looking around since June of last year, but the Home Depot stores in southern NH and CT just have not had it in stock.

my maroon does the same thing too...buries my hermits, clouds my tank, and now my tank is 1/2 barebottom, 1/2 deep sand bed.

Starboard? Also, I saw people mix sand and silicon glue to make a fake sand bed.

I washed mine really well and have no problem with clouding. Even when I had a mishap with the tunze and it resculpted half of the tank. I just added about half a bag the other day to make it a little deeper for the jawfish and it was clear within an hour.

Fine sand is supposed to be best. Coarser substrate can trap detrius & harm the little critters that dig in the sand
