I have seahorse babies !WHAT DO I DO?

I have been reading all of your posts and printing pictures. I'd like to get a set up going someday in my science classroom. It's something to think about for the near future.

Have a great weekend, Tom

Due to my lack of experience & preparation all my baby seahorses died.
I will post more details tomorrow.

:( Sowwy Gilbert... just keep your cultures going. Once your boy gets going, you can almost count on scheduled birthings. My silver male gave me the second batch. Now "ponyboy" (the daddy of my 1 month old fry) is preggers again. I witnessed a successful egg transfer a few days ago and now his pouch is getting fuller every day.

David - do you just keep Reidi horses? After the holidays I am going to start setting up my seahorse tank. I'm thrilled to see some people here are keeping horses. My plan is to have Erectus.

Diane,

I do have Reidi only..or so I think. I have one male that suspiciously looks like an Erectus in Reidi' clothing. Funny you mention this because I JUST took a good picture of him to blow up and tweak with photoshop. My goal is to count the dorsal rays, body rings, and tail rings (which are hard to do on a moving fish) for a positive ID.

If you are looking for Erectus later on, and have problems finding them locally, go to Seahorse.org and ask for "Danu". If you buy erectus from him, you are going to get tank raised fish that devour frozen food and are as healthy as you can get. Tell him I sent ya!

Thanks Dave. I know that DanU has great horses from what I've read on "the org", but I was hoping to find tank raised horses locally. Reidi fry are a lot smaller than Erectus fry, right? And harder to raise? I'm curious about your male and what he turns out to be. From what I've read, Erectus should not be mixed with any other species, but if you're doing it maybe it can work.

Yes, and have a longer pelagic phase where they are suseptible during that time.

Yes, only because they require smaller food items from day 1 until about week 2. Also because they do not "hitch" right away like Erectus do.

You really should not mix any seahorse species because of differing immunity issues, pathogens, etc. However, many do, especially if tank raised and as a matter of fact, there are many 'hybrid' horses out there. Ocean Rider's products include many hybrid varieties.

FWIW.. I did my lil' ray and ring count and my boy is, in fact, Reidi.
