I'm in dip trouble :)

What is the safest and most efficient way of dipping an SPS to get rid of red mites?

Now that my tank is clean I need to be careful with new additions.

TIA!

Lugols will not kill them all. That was my experience. I think you are better off with the 6 hour Interceptor treatment, and quarantine in a separate tank until certain they are clean.

Ditto.

Lugols didn't do much to eradicate the mites in my experience. I've been using Interceptor to kill possible mites in all new additions. I use a 5 gal q-tank with Interceptor dose enough for 10 gal (without ill effects). 6 hours minimum like Greg said. I've been doing overnight. So far so good. I only had one mishap on a new colony I bought. It killed all the acro crabs :( :(.

My solution is no more wild colonies or really reconsider gambling with wild colonies and not treat.

I haven't tried the Lugols or the Interceptor in a dip yet. The Interceptor cleared my tank though.

Those that tried to Lugols for a dip was it at the strength that Eric has posted to use? He claims it will only work if its at that strength. Anything less and some will live.

"Ordinary 10 drop/liter Lugol's is basically worthless, too, but we used 5-10ml liter for times from 30 seconds to 10 minutes. At five to ten minutes, the 5ml dosage stressed the corals, and they had some bleaching. The 10ml dosage was worse. But, at less than 5 minutes for the 5ml dosage, and 2-3 minutes for the 10ml dosage, all corals tolerated it fine, no bleaching, and 100% kill of bugs. The vast majority had died and turned black, falling to the bottom, within seconds. I pipetted a few bugs off the coral and put them directly into a dish with that strength Lugol's under a dissecting scope and they went catatonic almost instantly and were dead within 30 seconds."

Since I haven't personally tried either in a dip, I am simply looking for some more information on what you did exactly.

I find it odd that Eric claims the Interceptor didn't work for him until it reached the 24 hour mark but others have used the 6 hour length and claim it works. Hell. I've seen it work in my tank. At least I haven't seen a bug since I treated.

Then there are those that claim the Lugols didn't work, yet Eric claims that works well at a very high strength.

If I had red bugs on an acro currently, I would love to try the Lugols and see for myself. I think the Lugols dip would be better for a dip for many since its easier to get, and it shouldn't kill those cute little crabs. The Interceptor seems to be the only option for a whole system though.

Looking for options.

At the level that Eric is talking about I seriously doubt that a crab would survive. FWIW, I don't think that you are very likely to get the mites from a wild colony unless it's been held in a tank with other Acros that are infected. Not that I'm suggesting you purchase wild Acros, as they often do not survive.

I've started trading again with folks, I'm just careful about who I trade with, I make sure they know what they are doing. With the Interceptor treatment available now would it really be that big a deal if you got them in your main tank?

Joe Burger told Greg and I that he has had good results setting up a Q tank with Interceptor and holding new corals in there for 6 hours.
I'm thinking that's what I'll do before adding the corals to my 125.

With a QT tank with Interceptor how long can you leave it up like that? Would you be able to dose it once with Interceptor and leave it like that for say a month and any corals you get in that time dip them in that? When will the active ingredient stop working against the bugs.

Or will you need to empty/or use Carbon in the QT after the 6 hour dip and then do a water change/refill and dose for the next coral?

The interceptor treatment has to be dosed every time you put something in the QT, it it does not stay active.
