initial cycle finished

my 55g tank just finished its initial cycle. ammonia nitrite at 0 nitrates were 5 then i did my water change,sg is 1.025 and the temp is 79. i'm not planning on putting any fish in for another month or so maybe longer. i was wondering when i could put some nassarius snails in there to stir up my sand bed. the sand wasn't live to begin with and i added some live sand from another memebers tank over the weekend. should i wait longer to put the snails in. its fine i don't mind waiting just figured putting some nas snails in there would help get the sand stirred up a bit. any advice would be appreciated. if i'm being to cautious about adding the fish(don't think its actually possible to be to careful in this hobby) please let me know.

I added a fish after a month of cycling. I think you should put some life in the tank, whether it be snails or crabs etc. at this point.

thanks. the tank is 15 days old today. my buddy who helped me set up my first tank told me its best to wait a couple of months before adding fish since then it lets algae build up for the cuc and fish to eat. i figured the nas snails would be a good starting point. does anyone else think i could add a fish at this point. i always like as many opinions as i can get:) jays has an awesome pink spotted goby that i would love to have in my tank just not sure if it stable enough for him. if i can add him and like 10-20 nas snails that would be great. i'm fine with not being able to add fish i just want them to have the best chance of survival i can give them.

Seeing how the sand wasn't live, there isn't going to be tons of stuff for a cuc to eat.

I would go small and grow it as needed. I would also wait another 15 days.

thats what i figured. i was leaning towards waiting a little longer. i can be patient when i have to be. i just figured with the nas snails they might stir up the sand and spread around the live sand that i seeded the tank with. i was gonna start with like 10. get algae guys when the need arises. do you think i could add a fish in 15 days or should i wait like 30 ideally for the fish. what about shrimp could they go in in 15 days or should i wait longer. it would most likely be a fire shrimp.

You say this tank is just 15 days old and it's finished a cycle?
Did you monitor this cycle?Ammonia get really high?

yeah i tested everyday for the 15 days and watched the ammonia get really high and drop and then the nitrite got all the way up and dropped. i'm going to keep testing. i was just seeing if i could put snails in or if i should wait. i was leaning towards waiting anyways but i always ask here when i'm not sure about something. i hadn't planned on adding anything fish related until october but wasn't sure about nas snails and a shrimp or two. also i used api tes kit. i used them on my last tank and always liked them for the price range i'm working in.

Sounds like it's cycled.
Why wait till Oct. to add a fish?
I'd get something small and hardy.Maybe a yellow tail damsel, clown.
I would just add a few snails and see how they do first.A couple nassarius and maybe a few cerith. Then wait a couple weeks before your next purchase.
Test every other day for ammonia or if anything looks out of place for the first week.

yikes...no damsels...they get big, mean, and territorial. Consider adding a clown, or a fish you're going to want long term in your tank. Watch your parameters, you may see the levels go up as you add bioload.

no more damsels learned that lesson with my last tank. is a pink spotted goby a good first fish i figure if i add him first he'll have some time to get established and will maybe be less shy.

would a couple of blood shrimp be good to add first with the snails instead of the goby or should my tank be up a little bit before adding them.

i wasn't sure thats why i was asking. i thought most invertabrates were sensitive but figured if i took my time acclimating them they would be ok. i don't mind waiting just seeing what would be good to go in first. the goby would be awesome if i could put him in first. i look at him everytime i go to jays and keep hoping he'll be there when my tank is ready for him.

I have a yellow tail that's a model citizen.
Don't get a sand sifting goby.It will most definitely starve in your tank as it has no micro fauna to feed on in the sand bed.
They are jumpers as well,so you would need a cover.

JME,but shrimp don't fair to well in a new tank.
Just do a fish and a few snails for now.

You need some sort of bio load, hardy fish are great, damsels and clowns. If i were you, I would get a cheap feeder fish (~$1) along with the snails, to create a load and help your biofiltration grow and develop.

if your tank has cycled...no need to add any fish you don't want. Just add alittle flake food to continue as the ammonia source for the bacteria to feed on. I would add some cleanup crew and feed them. This will make sure water is fine before adding any fish.

i have a cover for the tank since i figured i'd be getting a goby at one point or another. they don't eat prepared food? they only eat whats in the substrate? would two clowns be ok i'd like to get a pair if i could. i know i can eventually i just figured it would be bettter to add both at the same time rather than one then another.

Yeah, you can do a pair of clowns. One large to be the female and one small one for the male.Goby's will eat some prepared food,mysis,pellets...ect.
But, most of the time they don't do very well in our tanks.I had one and within a week I was hating it.They throw sand literally half way up your rocks.Coral frags on the sand bed, forget it.I was kind of glad when he carpet surfed one night.I know........my bad.

thanks for all the advice everyone. from what ive read the pink spotted goby doesn't isnt' really a jumper they can but it seems they are one of the least likely gobies to take a jump. i just know they are skittish and figured if i put him in first he would be able to set up his turf first. when i see him at the store he never sifting sand just kind of chilling out in a hole between rocks. looks like i've got some more research to do. it never ends in this hobby:)
