Is it possible for a mystery wrasse to kill a CBB?

I guess I've been a little preoccupied with going back to work from maternity leave, and just last night noticed that I hadn't seen my CBB in a while. The tank is good & covered (not that he'd be likely to jump anyway).

I am going to assume the worst, because he didn't come out to feed last night, and this guy was a pig. Guess I'll be doing a BIG water change tonight.

Now I'm trying to solve the mystery. No pun intended... I did see the mystery wrasse (who was the last one to be added to the tank) sort of get in his face a little. Is it possible??? I can't think of anything else that could have done this guy in. All of my other fish in that tank are super mellow.

Have you had the CBB for about 2-6 months? A lot of people have had CBBs just die very quickly (within hours or a day of looking perfect) in that time frame after purchase (I think one or two died the same way almost a year after purchase). There was a discussion of possible reasons a year or so ago. Try searching and maybe you'll get lucky. Or maybe someone else here will have a better recollection of who started the thread, or what the subject was.

I'll have to check it out, but I don't know that it would apply to me. I got my CBB last May, so it's approaching a year.

Mystery Wrasses are known for potential predation of shrimp, I saw ours take out a Peppermint a while back. We have a few Blood Shrimp and a pair of Skunks and he has never touched those though, I would rate the chances at a good solid "maybe".

I think they are talking about a copper banded butterfly, not a coral banded shrimp.

Yes baby, she's talking about a CBB, not a CBS. That is very good info though!! I can't tell you how many times I think CBS when I see CBB and vice versa.


Like Nate mentioned, CBB's sometimes just die for no apparent reason when they seem to have been doing well for a while, eating etc. They're very strange that way. I would say it's definitely possible that another fish could have been responsible (as CBB's are very docile) or even stresssed it to death, but I would be more inclined to believe that the CBB just died. Sorry you lost your fish.

This happened to me. I had a CBB, and it did well for a little while, then it just died one night. There was no sign of illness or anything, it just was dead one morning. it was a mystery.
