Is my tank gonna recover?

I came home Sunday night only to find out that the person watching my reef closed the door to my fishroom which I believe may have caused the tank temps to get too high. I cannot say for sure how high as when I got home the lights were off, but the thermomter read 80.1 so I can only assume it got hotter. Secondly I went to check out the sump/fuge in the basement and noticed my maxijet suction cups came loose and caused a sand storm. It seems as though the polyps of my SPS are barely coming out and some zoo's are not opening and the classic sign is my xenia is not pulsing all that much. So here's what I did. Running carbon in sump and did a 10% water change that was all I could make up yesterday. Making more water today. My question is how often should I change carbon and am I doing enough water changes? Bottom line is will my tank recover?:(

Hi Meemoo,

Sounds like its not that serious, I have had my tank go into the 90's with no long term effects.

Hope all goes well.

Jim

None seem too out of wack SG=1.026, Alk=9.2dkH, Ca=450(a little high), Ammonia=0, Nitrite=0 and Nitrate=0. I was gone for just a day. Polyps are coming out a little bit more today, but not as extended as they usually are.

I would leave the carbon for a few days. I would maybe do 1 more water change for security and to make you feel better. good luck

80 isn't a problem imo. How long after lights out did you read the thermometer? The highest temp is when the lights go out, so if it was recent, you can bet it was not much higher. I'd think about tank temp/heating/cooling ventilation issues though, if closing a door in winter is creating a mild overheating problem.

I strongly recommend a digital therm. that records a max and min temp for every tank. Helps you see problems coming before your corals look sickly.

Ummmmm ... my tank has only been below 80 2 times since last march..... My tank runs an average of 82 most of the day since march with no ill effects, its usually at its lowest at 6am with it being right at 80.. ( I use both a digital and a glass thermometer so yes I know it is accurate)

I should clarify that was the temp when I got home the MH light's were off I'm guessing by my timer for and hour or 2. I had a fan on that goes off with my actinics and I think that's what brought the temp down after the halides went off. I usually never have a problem in winter and leave the door open to vent the room and usually keeps the temp stable at 79-80 with no ill effects. I'm guessing the tank temp got up to 84-85 with the door closed. I need a bigger fish room :D . So far today polyps are coming out more on most SPS. Xenia still looks like crap though.
