Ours never bothered the clams, but outgrew a six foot tank in a year.

its never 100% safe w/clams...the one I had didn't.

Now I am worry that I don't have a tank big enough for him.

I had him in a 72 with 3 clams, and he would pick at algae on them periodically, but he never bothered mantles.

Mine doesn't bother my clams... They do get very large fast though and they really love/need to swim as they mature. A juvenile would probably be ok in a smaller tank but I think an adult would be a real problem in something less than 150g.
