DO you think this might replace the need for Halide lighting in the near future? I have issues wiht heat and electric bills and these sound like the answer but having a hard time figuring out if they will indeed be able to replace halides on large tanks
They do have high power LEDs that will work great for tanks. At this time they cost about a grand. Like jbishop said the technology is still too new. It took about 10 years before compact fluorescents were cost effective. I wouldn't be surprise if it take LED technology at least 6 or 7 years before the price is reasonable enough.
+1 to what everyone else said. the tanks that i have seen with led lights are usually on the smaller size. there a thread over on RS that is all about one of the members who built a led hood for another members 10g i think.it is definitely a good read.
