LFS with live rock?

I've gotten my new JBJ 12g cube stable, corals and critters moved over with no losses but now I really need to fill the rest of the space. I have a couple chunks of live rock and some rubble, but the back wall is totally bare!

Does skiptons have some decent stuff? I feel like marco ships more than ill want and delivery people have a hell of a time finding my place

(p.s. that hair algae is gone now)

have you gone to tropic isle? there have some ok stuff. but its pricy like for live 11$ a pound. and idk about dead

Regardless I would dip any LR from any store going in your tank. IMO its always best to start with dry rock.

Where are you located? TI has rock, as does Skiptons. I've always got great rock from Skiptons. Never any uglies in there, but loaded with pods and mysid. Uncle Ned's sold me some fantastic Fiji a few years back. Aqua Addicts in NH has a nice little stock tank of various rock.

my dad might be starting a tank soon do you have skiptons price per pound?

No, and just as with anything in the hobby, the prices change with the incoming invoices :) You'd have to ask. We have great sponsor forums OR you could call them. They've been more than helpful to me in the past.

I'm all for starting with dry stuff then I don't get anything funky (and its cheaper), does that have to be cycled separately or can I rinse it and use right away? Skips have any? haha

No idea if they have any just call and ask. If its going in a new tank I would just put it in like normal rock and watch the cycle happen.

well i only ask because this tank is already established, does dry rock have dead stuff on it that would cause a spike or would i be able to get away with putting it in the tank

You can get some good quality LR from LFS's that don't have pest.
I'll throw a plug in for John,Sea Creatures in N. Providence has 2 100 gallon rubermaids full for I believe $6 a pound. He even has a scale right there so you can wiegh the pieces.

sometimes it does.

depends on the dry rock... but i would cycle it anyways just to be sure.

I got some awesome rock from marco rocks, that was sold as dry, but it still needed to be cycled, and he will even tell you that you should cycle all rock you get from him.

I cycled mine in a 45 gallon barrel for about a month or so.

Dry rock will need to be cycled, so I would not add it to an established tank. Also, for the amount you'd need for a 12g with rock already in it wouldn't make the cost of the live stuff too prohibitive.
In terms of LR, the number of beneficial organisms that come with it far outweigh the risk of pests which can be dealt with afterwards in a worst case scenario. Also, dipping LR is a big no no as it will decimate nearly all invertebrate life, essentially making LR dead, and causing a potential cycle as a result of the die off that will ensue.
Skiptons has the best LR that I've seen in an area LFS. They have tons of it and it is all fully cured and largely pest free.

+1 on LR versus dry. Half the fun is seeing what you get. IMO.

Jays aquatics was at $7/lb this week and he had some nice pieces as did aqua addicts. I have experienced a crash from dry rock and i do not recommend it. IMO anything bought from Jay is safe and in good health, he runs a tight ship. Unless you are building a huge rock pile and have a long time to cycle dry rock is not worth it. I agree with the NOT dipping of rock as well. I have also heard of people rinsing live sand with rodi water which makes zero sense to me. Fish have livers so they can deal with changes in salinity but lesser organisms can't deal with this change which is why we dip sick fish in fresh water, to kill the bacteria or parasites. rinsing sand or rock in fresh would kill a huge amount of beneficial bacteria. The live rock will help make your tank much more stable. All natural baby.

I have gotten the dea fiji rock from skipton s rinsed it and added it roght to the tank rince well orange dust comes off. It is $5 lb but it is dry so you get alot more rock per pound. I was told they have not had a customer say yet that this rock will cause you to have a cycle. I have used it in both tanks I also made sure I had nice live rock to reseed the dead rock

Lovely Pets sells live rock at $5 a pound. The last time I was in there though the LR was loaded with aptasia, so you want to really scrutinize what you purchase. I also smell the rock and if it smells foul, I don't buy it.
