Lighting Question

I have a 55g 24" deep column tank. I want to get a medal halide combo unit that hangs from the ceiling. But I can only find 24" and 36" units and the 36" is pushing it for space. Can I go with a 24"? Will the light spread? And how much light would I need to keep SPS corals? Any help is appreciated.

what are the dimentions of the 55? I havn't heard of a column tank.

The dimensions are 30 long x 24 high x 18 deep.

or even putting one together from a retro kit?
