Local seawater in aquarium

I know people don't do it, I'm just courious why it doesn't work. I live on the ocean and i always kinda feel wierd spending money on mixes. Has anyone tried heating it, changing the salinity, and mabye run though a skimmer for a while. Could there be benifits? Again just courious.
 
PS i already know the boston aquarium uses harbor water in the big tank, Im talking about reefs.
 
Yeah, check out the Useful Threads stuck to the top of the Reef Talk forum. One of the useful threads in there is a link to many discussions about using natural salt water.
Quite a few people use NSW. Trick is to observe a few simple rules. Those rules are mentioned in the discussions.

Yes like don't collect your water next to sewage treatment plants!
