Longest your fish have lived in a trash can?

Like the title says, how long have your fish/live rock/corals lived successfully in a brute trash can or other container?

Possibly doing a little renovation work in my living room that would require me to take down the tank to get it out of the way. We are going to be pulling up the rug and laying down some cheap faux wood stuff my landlord picked out and painting the walls. I will keep the water heated and will also have power heads keeping the water moving.

Oh boy. Do like I did and put the floor around your stand haha. I really didn't want to move my 120 and 55 gal sump right after just moving it across town. Just kidding. I think your security deposit would light on fire

Landlord is on board, John. Haha.

I'm thinking it'd be less than weekend. Maybe just a day/24 hours. Just long enough to get the floor down and the wall behind the tank painted.

I had fish in a brute for a little over 48 hours. So I'd think you would be fine.

The one thing I would actually be concerned is the fresh paint behind the tank releasing any chemicals/ odors getting into the water from the paint. At that point I would personally wait a few days with the windows wide open to clear the air.

Didn't even think of that. When this happens I will do my best to exhaust the fumes.

My fish and coral lived in this for about 12 days. I lost a fish that swam into a pump and 1 jumped but no water quality deaths.

I did tank transfer method to QT a new fish and used a 5g home depot bucket as one of my "tanks" - so a few three day stints. Brute trash can is just an oddly shaped tank. As long as it is heated / circulated / cycled (your LR), it is no problem for any length of time for fish. Corals require light if it is more than a couple of days.

while I would generally agree with most comments here, keep in mind that the size of that foxface and the tang (tangs in general) will require a lot of oxygen in the water. Make well sure that you have a ton of surface agitation. I lost 3 tangs in one felt swoop by housing them in a spare 100 gallon tank while I set up a new tank. Had 2 mp40s going. But, they didn't break the surface tension. Deaths were less than 24 hours. This was not a water quality issue, but a lack of oxygen by being off the return pump and skimmer overnight. Had I moved the pumps a little higher to break the surface, I am 100 percent confident, those three fish would have survived.

^Excellent point.

Indeed. I am loving all this feedback. Makes me feel more confident in doing this.

I have 4 power heads and 2 air pumps with stones I can use as well to make sure I've got all the oxygen I can get. I've also got a light on my 20g I can use for the time being, to keep at least one of he brute's lit

just remember, its not all about circulation, its also about oxygenation. Make sure the surface is broken. May be noisy, but worth it in the end.
