Looking to get second opnion on these glass chips...

Just got my new upgrade tank from Cadlights yesterday. I have contacted them already and waiting for their response, but I would like to get opnions on this. It doesn't seem like it would affect the tank beyond cosmetics, but better safe than sorry...


Tank is a 120G 48x30x20 - 1/2" starfire glass


This one is a little smaller than a dime and I can't feel it on either side of the glass...

This one is on the bottom left. Same size. I can feel it on the top, but not on the other side of the glass.

Does anyone know of a way to verify that the tank still structural sound? Do you know any place that could help me or maybe even fix it for me?

The damage goes into the tank area and is a little more than just a chip on the edge of the glass. I would venture to say that the integrity of the tank is compromised once under stress.

That sucks after waiting so long for the tank.

The one on the bottom scares me the most that panel takes all the weight of the water and LR.

Thats like 1,000 lbs pressing on that crack.

Both cracks are on the edge of the glass panel... There doens't seem to be any "running/hair lines. It's like a flat 1mm thick 1/4" piece of glass got scooped up... I am guessing from shipping it.

If it were me I wouldn't do anything other than call Cadlights and politely tell them you're refusing this tank and request a refund or replacement. No way I'd trust using that tank, not to mention when I spend that much money on something I want it new, without issues. This is why they have, or should have, insurance built into their pricing model (for them and with the shipper).

If I dinged it after receiving it then I'd maybe ask them for recommendations on best how to proceed, but wouldn't hold them accountable.

Sorry man,......that stinks but i'm with X......no need to accept this tank. Of all the things we buy for our tanks to make us sleep better at night, dealing with chips in the tank is unacceptable in my book....especially with the awesome build you have going on.

Also, if there was enough moving around in the shipping process to cause the cracks I would have to think that there could have been some tweaks to the seams that you cannot see, especially with a newly sealed tank.

Mr.X, I definetely didn't do it my self. I noticed it after I unpacked it and inspected it closer. I have already contacted them. Still waiting to hear back...


I wish there was a way to "prove or disprove" the tank's safety at this point...

Wasn't implying that you did... just saying, responsibility lies where it lies. You didn't cause the cracks, so why should you have to deal with it other than contacting the vendor (which you did) and waiting for them to handle it (which sucks!).

I can only imagine the frustration you're going through. Bad enough waiting while you research, buy, build, etc. without Murphy stepping in like this.

cadlights tend to not pack their tanks well during shipping you should check RC

Check you credit card benefits. Some have purchaser protection etc. I am assuming you put this on your card.

I did check it, but obviously missed these two chips. I didn't see them until I completely unpacked everything and sat the tank on the stand. They are kind of hard to see if you are not looking for them...

..." during tank use especially for reefs, rocks can chip the edges, but thats totally safe as long as it is a surface chip. if the chip hasnt come back out and stays in there, it can spread. but the round shape of it is totally safe to use and your tank is fully warrantied.

We have been building aquariums for over 25 years and never had a crack come from a surface chip before. the ones that do cause a problem are if they are straight and deeper than 20% of the thickness of the glass."



They are offering me a partial refund. Not sure I want to go that route... I need some time to think about it and do a little more research on this.

I'd ask them if they will pay all the repair/recovery fees if the tank explodes in 3 months from now. Partial refund -- that's their way of hoping you'll take a little money and go away. Would cost them a lot more to fight with the shipping company, take it back, and send you a new one.

I'd personally only settle for a new tank or a complete refund. Nothing else is acceptable.

I think they said the warrenty still apply even the partial refund is issued.
IMO, I don't think the tank has structural issues and just does not feel right to pay for a premium tank that comes with chips.

I look at it more that you paid for and bought a new tank and should not have to deal with the look of a chip in the glass. You also should not have to worry if it is safe. I would demand a new tank or complete refund.

120g of water all over the floor is VERY VERY BAD!!
Not worth the risk. Every time you leave the house that will be on your mind

New tank at no charge, period!
