This morning i came down and my yellow tang was dead on the sand bed. he/she always seemed to have something wrong with him since i got it cause it never really breathed right.

Also, the other fish and shrimp all all moving really slowly and seem to be breathing a little heavy what could be going on?

I also have a little bit of a red slime problem but im buying the red slime remover today, could this have anything to do with whats going on?

Also, the was doing some electrical work on the lights yesterday so they were not turned on at all yesterday.

No im not...but this tank has been up for 5 months and i have never had a problem...im thinking about adding a hang on skimmer in the next few weeks...any suggestions on models?

Just the lights,or was everything off?

Sounds like an ammonia or disolved oxygen problem.
You really need to post your water parameters.
And should address this problem right away, not wait til you get a HOB skimmer. If you have a MaxiJet powerhead you could put the venturi tube on the outlet and get some bubble action going. This will help break the surface tention and get better gas exchange. It will also help raise the PH.

You may not have seen a problem but your animals may have been suffering for some time. As the other posters said, check your ammonia ASAP. Also you need to get an air stone or a power head injecting air into your tank right away. Please don't feed your tank until you know your ammonia level. Extra food could make matters worse.

The tank is 65 gallons. with 100 pounds of LR. 40 lbs or LS.
Running only a canister filter and a few powerheads.

PH: 8.0
Temp: 80
Sg. 1.026
Nitrates: 5
Nitrite: 0
Calc: 360

I agree with the too little oxygen in the tank.

The lights being off is the kicker. Algae when the lights are on intake co2 and exhaust oxygen. When the lights are off the algae intake oxygen and exhaust co2.
IMO there is no question in my mind as to the cause of the fish death.
If you do not have a slimmer you should have an airstone to help add o2 to the water column.

The tank being up for 5 months just means you were lucky to not have any problems sooner. The algae outbreak was the final piece to the puzzle.

Good Luck - Jenn

I agree possibly ammonia or oxygen problem, could also be a parasite introduced from the yellow tang if proper QT procedures were not followed... but that would not explain the shrimp...

If your tank is small & you just added it the yellow tang could have caused the ammonia spike & killed an already weak fish.

Just an FYI also, the red slime remover is not going to do you much good without a way to export the trapped organics. You need to have the protien skimmer before dosing the red slime remover.

Does 1 of these pumps break the surface of the water with their flow?
If not then I am sticking with the low oxygen for now.

Good point Jovanna I did not even catch that 1.

wow... 3 posts while I was typing my response... I'm slow!

Jenn is right, the cyano also points to a co2 problem.
Whatever you do don't use any redslime remover.
That would definitely doom your fish. The stuff drops the disolved oxygen levels and requires the use of an airstone anyways.
And with your tank already showing signs of suffering from this problem..........that would be the last straw.

them didnt use to but i moved 2 of them so they break the water this morning because i thought it was an oxygen problem as well.

WOW thanks guys for all of the help. i wont use the red slime remover until the fish look better and there is more disolved oxygen in the water and i have a skimmer.

Gald to be of some help,

Good luck and hope everything works out well for ya. - Jenn

Look into an AquaC remora or I believe there's even a CPR Bak Pak for sale in the equip for sale thread.I have a CPR and they're not stellar. But with a few mods and adjusted correctly it will do a pretty good job on a 65 gallon.
It really depends on your budget.
